Description:
[Civil War] Bill of Lading. [New York?]: [Cromwell's New-York & New Orleans Steamship Line] November 21, 1863. One sheet 16.5 x 29 cm partly printed document with manuscript inserts. Very good.
The Union forces in May 1863 captured the city of New Orleans. By this document $10,000 of United States Treasury Notes are being sent to the City, in all likelihood to purchase cotton or other goods from the captured port. See for example, the New York Times for September 1863 describing a shipment from New Orleans of cotton and accompanied by U.S. Treasury notes, since the Confederate Currency would no longer be valid, people would need to finance purchase and sales with U.S. financial instruments. Interestingly, in February 1863 Congress rejected a provision in the banking bill that would have made interest-bearing Treasury notes legal tender. An interesting look at the practical issues in carrying on commerce during the Civil War.

[Cattle Brands] [Indian Territory] Trustrim Connell. Business Card. [Darlington, I.T.?]: [Cheyenne Transporter Press?] [Circa 1880s] White card stock with cattle and horse brands, 6.7 x 11.2 cm. Verso blank. Near fine.
The Treaty of Medicine Lodge (1867) relocated the Cheyenne and Arapaho to Indian Territory. The Darlington Indian Agency, established in 1868, served the newly relocated tribes. Darlington, near Fort Reno, thrived as a frontier hub due to a wagon line. The Agency had a printing press and printed the Cheyenne Transporter newspaper, which featured advertisements with very similar cattle and horse brand images, making it appear likely this card was printed on this press in Darlington. In 1885 the journal added the subtitle, "Indian and Stock Journal," emphasizing the importance of cattle raising in the area. – See, "Cheyenne Transporter," Gateway to Oklahoma History. Connell enlisted in the 138th Pennsylvania Infantry and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1865. Connell… Read More
