Cantabrigiæ, Nov-Anglorum (Cambridge, New England): Typis Richardi et Samuelis Draper (Richard and Thomas Draper, Printers), 1766.
This large broadside, measuring approximately 17" x 21.5", announces the upcoming public defense of 127 academic theses by students who would be graduating from Harvard College in August of 1766. It has some minor edgewear and light soiling. There are storage folds with some splits reinforced on the reverse with what appears to be tissue and/or archival tape.
The 127 disputations announced within this broadside are grouped into eight categories: ethics, metaphysics, mathematics, physics, grammar, rhetoric, technology, and theology.
Broadsides, similar to this one, were issued from Harvard's first commencement in 1642 until 1810. The student defenses were based on the traditional European practice of public student disputations. Lyon, France: Jacob Sacon for Anton Koberger, 1520. Disbound. Very good. Anton Koberger, the godfather of Albrecht Dürer, was a German goldsmith, printer, publisher most famous for his printing of the Nuremberg Chronicle, a landmark early universal history. He also printed a series of Bibles between 1512 and 1520. This leaf (9½" x 13½") is from an edition that was published in Lyon, France by Jacob Sacon for Anton Koberger circa 1520. It contains the text of Genesis 37 to 41 and features a wood cut depicting Pharoah's Dream of the 14 Cow from Chapter 14 verse 1.

Basel: Heinrich Petri, 1578. Disbound. Very good. This disbound leaf from Munsters Cosmographia measures 8" x 13.5". It contains six woodcuts showing unusual men and animals from the Indian subcontinent. The leaf is in nice shape with some marginal toning. One woodcut shows a pigmy conversing with a man from Dondun where the peoples' ears were so large they could be used as sleeping blankets. Three woodcuts picture storks: one of them shows giant storks fighting a human army. Another illustration shows an ant that is larger than a tree, and the last is of a monkey-man carrying his sword and spear. . Sebastian Munster was a cosmographer and professor of Hebrew who taught at several European universitys. During his life, he became the center of a network of scholars who provided him with maps, anecdotes, and descriptions of pehnomena of the known world. Sound binding, clean pages, almost no wear. Doesn't appear to have ever been read. Over 250 drink recipes including 14 classics that Burke identifies as the "World's Most Famous Cocktails". Includes a three-page essay on "The Etiquette of Drinking" (a surprisingly cautionary warning about alcohol); two pages devoted to wines, liqueurs, pairings, and temperatures; and an eight-page selection on "Food Bits for the Cocktail Hour" that include recipes for assorted canapes, lobster dishes, rarebits, and sandwiches. Seldom found in condition this nice, especially first printings.
