Description:
Salt Lake City: University of Utah Press, 1961. First Edition. 475pp. Octavo [24 cm] Green cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine/Near fine. This work contains 204 songs from Mormon Country, compiled and edited by Lester A. Hubbard, and music transcripts by Kenly W. Whitelock. This is a collection of traditional songs and ballads which were sung by Mormons and other colonists who migrated to Utah between 1847-1900. Many of the converts to Mormonism came directly from Great Britain. A large number migrated from the Central and Eastern states to establish homes and a new life in Zion, as Utah was called. These immigrants, as well as Mormon missionaries in the United States and Europe, imported their favorite songs, which provided entertainment for several decades before modern music began to supplant them.

Description:
[Ogden], 1950. Oil on board [61 cm x 77 cm] in a nice custom frame [69 cm x 85 cm] signed at the foot near the center in red. Bright painting from the notoriously reclusive artist. Image depicts a bar scene showing a sailor, woman and a bald man laughing and smiling. The sailor is likely a reference to the time Rosenbaum spent in Guadalcanal during World War II. David Howell Rosenbaum (1908-1982) was born in Brigham City and was part of the Logan group of artists who studied with Calvin Fletcher at the Utah State Agriculture College (USU) in 1931. During the Great Depression, he worked for the WPA Federal Art Project, painting many of his best-known works. In 1938, Rosenbaum moved to New York City to attend the Art Students League. Rosenbaum joined the navy at the start of the United States involvement in World War II. During his service in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, he drew many scenes and made several small watercolor paintings. He arrived home again sometime after the war, and was a… Read More

St. Paul, MN: Great Northern Railway, 1940. Color print [30.5 cm x 23 cm] in nice, bright condition. Near fine. Winhold Reiss (1886-1953) was a painter, illustrator, and interior designer who emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1913, where he taught art for a time at the Art Students' League. In 1919 he traveled to Montana to paint portraits of members of the Blackfeet nation. Reiss depicted his subjects as they were, without the romanticization that many of his fellow artists at the time were using to depict Native Americans. During the summers from 1927 to 1948, Reiss spent in Glacier National Park studying and drawing members of the Blackfeet, these trips were sponsored by the Great Northern Railway, who acquired the majority of these works, and used them in promotional material.

Bird's-eye view of Bingham looking down canyon. "Bingham is a little like the gambler. Crowded together in their gulch without bringing-up or ear-washing, the people of the camp have evolved into a community, though it took a long time and there were a lot of graves in the local Boot Hill before the transformation came about. Maybe the copper sulphide in the soil destroyed the germs of evil in those old rowdies as it destroyed the typhus germs in the garbage-laden creek. Or maybe the camp simply grew up. At any rate Bingham gets along better with the rest of the state now." - Wallace Stegner 'Mormon Country' p.268.
