This directory was distributed under the leadership of the organization’s first female Chair, Betty E. Pulliam. “Our strategy is to marshal the consumer power of our community for the benefit of our community!...This is your Directory, and we urge you to begin today patronizing these black-owned businesses. This is the first of several directories to be printed for your use. (While we do not protest against non-black-owned businesses with a large black patronage, we urge you to support black-owned businesses).”   Not found separately in OCLC, and no issues in commerce as of February 2023.

Broadside measures approximately 10.5” x 16” and is housed in a lightly-toned olive green portfolio with baby foot motif. Overall Near Fine. Text printed in red, halftone illustration of a baby’s foot and door after pencil drawing by author. SIGNED by Niffenegger in an edition of 75. Colophon printed inside portfolio reads, “Printed on two Van der cook presses by Audrey Niffenegger assisted by Bea Nettles’ Experimental Printmaking class at UIUC School of Art and Design. Folio designed by Jason Pietrucha, laser-cut by Michael Peyton and printed by the Soybean Press. 2-7-08.” Niffenegger trained as a visual artist and has gone on to write the critically-acclaimed The Time Traveler’s Wife (basis for the 2009 film starring Rachel McAdams) and Her Fearful Symmetry. Not offered in commerce, and only three U.S. holdings per OCLC (UIUC, Central Florida, Newberry).

Black cardboard box with folding flap, approximately 4.25” x 7.25” which houses two audio cassette tapes and a yellow printed insert, “Liner Notes (#1), folded to make six panels (5” x 10.5” unfolded). Liner notes are a touch wrinkled, with wear to box and a small indentation on front, both cassette tapes are in excellent condition. Overall VG+.    Typed address label (with August 1972 postmark) to Gerard Dombrowski at ABYSS Publications in Somerville, MA. Dombrowski was one of the founding editors of the experimental poetry magazine Abyss, which launched in 1967 and is notable for publishing, among others, Charles Bukowski, who was a friend of Dombrowski.
