Description:
This wonderfully alive tapestry of Saxon England and Celtic Britian written in A.D. 731 still has the power to transport us back to the forests, fens, and mountains, and to the problems which men faced during these crucially formative years when this land had still to be wrought into one entity. Leo Sherley-Price has well succeeded in his aim of producing an accurate and readable version of Bede's work in modern English and, as he remarks in his introduction, 'we realize even more clearly that the past is not dead and done with, but a force to be reckoned with, silently moulding the present and the future.'

Description:
By T.H. White, author of The Once and Future King. With more than One Hundred and Twenty-Five illustrations, astonishingly clever and often most beautiful in design - from the original medieval manuscripts. A Bestiary is a serious work of natural history, and is one of the bases upon which our own knowledge of biology is founded, however much we may have advanced since it was written. There is no particular author of a bestiary. It is a compilation, a kind of naturalist's scrapbook, which has grown with the additions of several hands. Its sources go back to the distant past, to the Fathers of the Church, to Rome, to Greece, to Egypt, to mythology, ultimately to oral tradition which must have been contemporary with the caves of Cromagnon. Its influence has extended throughout literature and … country people are still repeating some of its saws.

Description:
Blake's Milton: A Study in the Selfhood attempts a view of the poem that comprehends not only the intellectual and historical background, but also the symbolic, psychic, and cosmic world created by Blake. Dr. Howard's study thus goes well beyond the universe of this one poem to shed light on and provide insight into the whole mythology of William Blake.

Description:
Boethius - C.480-524 A.D., Roman statesman and philosopher, was son of Flavius Manlius Boetius, after whose death he was looked after by several men, especially Memmius Symmachus. He married Symmachus's daughter, Rusticiana, by whom he had two sons. All three men rose to high honours under Theodoric the Ostrogoth, but Boethius fell from favour, was tried for treason, wrongly condemned and imprisoned at Ticinum (Pavia), where he wrote his renowned De Consolatione Philosophiae, until he was put to death in 524, to the great remorse of Theodoric. Boethius was revered as if he were a Saint and his bones were removed in 996 to the Church of S. Pietro in Ciel d' Oro, and later to the Cathedral. The tower in Pavia where he was imprisoned is still venerated. Boethius was author of Latin translations of Aristotle, of commentaries on various philosophical works, of original works on logic, of five books on music (for long a text-book in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge), and other works. Description:
The Book of Memory is a wide-ranging and amply illustrated account of the workings and function of memory in medieval society. Memory was the psychological faculty valued above all others in the period stretching from late antiquity through to the Renaissance. This study by a literary scholar draws upon insights from a variety of disciplines, including modern hermeneutical theory, art history and codicology, psychology and anthropology, the histories of medicine, education, and of meditation and spirituality. It will be important to students in all these fields who value interdisciplinary approaches to historical material.

Description:
Baldassare Castiglione's prose dialogue Il Libro del Cortegiano was first published in 1528. It is supposed to take place at the Court of Urbino, where the author resided for some time, and discusses all the qualifications of an ideal courtier. One of the masterpieces of Italian Renaissance literature, Baldassare's work was translated into English by Sir Thomas Hoby (1561). It was doubtless known to Shakespeare, and certainly influenced Surrey, Wyatt, Sidney and Spenser. The present translation is that of Hoby, checked with the Italian edition of 1588; and the volume contains, in addition to W.H.D. Rouse's Introduction, a valuable note by Professor Drayton-Henderson on astiglione and English Literature.
