Description:
The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:Robert Barnard: British writer of 48 novels and collections, plus 5 nonfiction works and editor of three anthologies. Had a number of short detective series, the most significant were the Perry Trethowan series (5 novels) and the Charlie Peace series (11 novels). Barnard died in 2013. This is the fourth Charlie Peace novel.George Chesbro:
Chesbro wrote more than 25 novels and almost 100 short stories. His best known sleuth was Robert "Mongo the Magnificent" Fredrickson, often aided by his brother Garth. Mongo was his stage name in the circus, where he was an acrobat. Mongo also… Read More

Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:Mary McMullen: Part of a family of mystery writers, McMillen wrote 19 mystery novels without ever resorting to a series formula. Her mother was Helen Reilly and her sister was Ursula Curliss. McMullen died in 1986. Bill Knox:
Knox wrote under his own name and three pen names. He wrote two detective series under his own name, the Thane and Moss series (25 books) and the Webb Carrick series (15). There were three other series which he published under the name of Robert MacLeod, totaling another 22 books. He also wrote 12 stand alone novels. Knox died in 1999. This is the… Read More

Description:
I went to research the market for this book and found that there are many offered for sale out there, with many different appearances. Quite a few are being claimed as First Editions, which they clearly aren't, since they don't even look alike. Different cover designs, different dust jacket art. They can't all be firsts, and, in fact, none of them are. Grossett & Dunlap didn't do firsts often, if ever. They also didn't provide print counts, later publication dates, or anything else to tell you when a given copy was published. (This means that heirloom Wizard of Oz you have at home is not likely a first edition, either.) The original First Edition was printed in Berlin, in German, in 1923. The First American Edition was published in 1928 by Simon & Schuster. Therefore, this is not a first edition. It is, however, a nice edition and is at least 60 years old, as the publisher's address lacks a zip code. The book is in great shape, with no marks, and little edgewear. The dust jacket has a few tears and…

Using few recurring characters, Francis' 43 novels stand alone as masterpieces of investigative fiction. Francis passed away in 2010. Hugh Pentecost:
A pen name of Judson Philips, a man of many detectives. Under both names, Philips published over 100 books, most of which were in one of eight different series. The largest series featured Pierre Chambrun with 23 books. In spite of all these series, almost a quarter of his books were stand-alone novels. This is the eighteenth Pierre Chambrun… Read More
