Description:
London: Privately published 1959, 1959. One of five copies privately published "for the pleasure of Felix, Jean, Michael, Felicia, Stéphane". 187x125mm. pp. 71 [1bl] with five blank leaves at the beginning and end. Bound by Henri Mercher in 1960, signed to foot of front pastedown. Boards are made of gold inlayed Plexiglas, the gold spelling out "Jean". Black morocco spine lettered in gilt. With the original slipcase. A striking binding in immaculate condition and an excellent example of Mercher's innovative design and technique in which he used unorthodox materials. Henri Mercher (1912-1976) trained with Robert Bonfils at the École Estienne. Mercher said that he was one of the worst students but on the evidence of this stylish, minimalist work this seems unlikely. Presumably Stephane Golmann had the other four copies of this work bound in a similar fashion but we have found no record of them. Golmann was a fascinating figure: a singer songwriter in the French chanson tradition (the works in this… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for T.N.Longman and O.Rees 1801, 1801. Only edition. Small 8vo. pp. [6], 201, [1bl]. Contemporary calf, double fillet borders to boards, rebacked to style with gilt decoration and black morocco label lettered in gilt. Edges and corners rubbed with a little wear to the latter. All edges speckled. Internally near fine. A very nice copy of the first book published by Ireland following his exposure as a forger. Rare in commerce, only two copies appearing at auction in the last fifty years. William Henry Ireland was a type familiar in the world of letters and books - the clever but rackety fantasist. He absorbed from his father, a publisher, a fascination with Shakespeare and, perhaps more significantly, the forgers Chatterton and Macpherson. A spell working for a lawyer gave him access to old documents which he studied and copied before taking the plunge and forging a deed containing Shakespeare's signature. His father, thinking it real, was thrilled. Ireland began to produce more… Read More

Description:
London: H.F. & G. Witherby [1953], 1953. First edition. Two volumes. Signed by the author to the half title of volume II. Demy 4to. (285x220mm). pp.xvi, 510; vii, 314, [2]. Volume I in navy buckram, volume II in navy cloth lettered in gilt to the spine. Cream dust jacket lettered and decorated in black and red, price clipped. Plastic protective wrapper. Binding and jackets are in very good condition with only the slightest shelfwear. Internally both volumes are in excellent condition. There is the colour frontispiece to volume I but not volume II, indicating that the second volume is not the first issue, although the first volume is. However, all the plates, colour and black and white are present together with the maps, making this a lovely pair. Harrison's Birds of Kent is frequently cited as one of the finest of the county bird studies and the author's own illustrations add a particular charm.
