London: Encore, 1959. First Edition. wrappers. Near fine. 1st edition, preceding all others. The dedication copy of his second play and first book. Original pictorial wrappers, nearly fine. Signed presentation copy to his wife, dated Dec. 1959, and although the dedication wasn't confirmed in type until the American edition published in 1961, this is it, as tectonic a copy as this book can be.

Blondie Bumstead, and her husband Dagwood, were created in 1930 and are alive at 92.  Their comic strip has appeared in 2,000 newspapers, in 47 countries, and in 35 languages, and it still appears daily.  They have starred in 28 films, 2 TV series, 2 TV specials, radio shows from 1939 to 1950, comic books since 1947, they've been merchandised hundreds of times, they got their own U. S. postage stamp in 1995, she's had a dessert named after her (a Blondie is a Brownie made with vanilla instead of cocoa powder) and Blondie was the eponym of the Hall of Fame rock & roll band that was her namesake.   Ah booksellers.  Pop culture matters.  It is real, and demand for it is real, because it is market driven.  .

OCLC records one copy of the 1946 edition but none of the 1952 or 1957. Original, spiral bound, stiff pictorial wrappers, 66, 42, and 62 pages, printed on rectos only. Near fine condition, complete and unused, as issued, Games for the bride's crew, all of whom are compelled to play their roles like Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Sue.

Early American dialect stories (published the year after Uncle Remus), some of them completely original, some of them new retellings, and among the latter a different account of the Tar Baby folk tale. Do I need to say that it's rare in jacket? Ok, said.

Fine in a dustjacket with just small nicks and tears at the edges, else near fine, and with the rare wraparound band, also near fine, and the band is of critical importance because it was only issued with the few earliest copies, and says so right on it, and therefore it is the only identifier of the 1st issue and copies without the band can be dismissed like junk mail. The London edition, in this condition, is 10 times our price even though it is later, and our NY edition in jacket, when it has the band, is rarer than the London edition in jacket, but that is another fact that is not widely known. Heft I bis V. Pages 15-27 with one folding plate after Freud by F. Schima. General light wear to the edges and the spine ends, old piece of tape to the inner front wrapper, minimal sporadic foxing throughout, occasional short tears to outer margins (none touching text), else a very good, unrestored copy, uncut and largely unopened. Refs: Norman F1. Grinstein 37. A product of Freud's student research while he was at the Institute of Physiology in Vienna, to which he had been admitted the previous fall. The paper is a study of Reissner cells in the spinal cord of Petromyzon Planeri (the European Brook Lamprey).
