All twelve issues are in good or better condition, three have a cover with a lovely graphic of the Chrysler Building in NYC, a Deco masterpiece at that point the tallest skyscraper in the world.

(No "second edition" statement; and like most of Crane's early work, this is printed without a date.) 56 pp. Thirty-seven classic English, French, and German nursery rhymes, both words and music, including "Lucy Locket", "London Bridge", and "Sur le Pont d'Avignon", to name but a few. All are beautifully illustrated in colors, including intricate historiated borders and 11 full-page full-color illustrations. Nearly square quarto, 17.8 x 18.5 cm., cloth-backed illustrated paper boards and decorated endpapers designed by Crane; with all edges tinted yellow. 1865. [EHON] Yamamoto BAIOKU, artist. BAIOKU GAFU. N.P., N.D. No publishing information, but the final note is dated Keiô Gan-nen [1865]. 27.2 x 20.5 cm. String-bound, Japanese style, fukuro-toji, with the printed paper title label intact. The covers are a bit worn and there are a few internal blemishes, but overall a good copy of this scarce book. The 60 b+w woodblock images, largely of birds, flowers and landscapes seem to capture the age in which the book appeared. The restlessness and chaos of the last years of the old regime are reflected here. Baioku, the adopted son of Yamamoto Baiitsu, was born in 1822. Like Baiitsu, he was known for his abilities as a Nanga painter. Mitchell catalogues this work on p.216 (the Ryerson copy). The KSSM lists but two copies of this book located in Japan. I find the variety and occasional brilliance of the images an inspiration. Nancy & Paris: Berger-Levrault et Cie, 1888. 4to. 316 pp. Headpieces by Gustave Fraipont (1849-1923). #74 of 300 on Holland paper of a total edition of 315. The author is unknown, but the dedication is signed by "Docteur ****". Signed binding by Stikeman & Co. of half brown crushed morocco over patterned silkcovered boards. Spine in 5 raised bands with elaborate gilt compartments, featuring butterflies. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Original printed wrappers bound-in. Minor wear to silk over boards, otherwise near fine.

1979. HASHIYAMA Takashi. BAKUMATSU MEIJI BUMMEI KAIKA. Nagoya: Maspro, Sho^wa 54 [1979] Folio, paper over boards. 222 pp. The first complete study of late ukiyo-e prints from the era of Perry to mid-Meiji [approx 1855-1890]. The text is in Japanese, but the captions of the illustrations are romanised, as well. The text is illustrated in color throughout, much care was taken to ensure the fidelity of the colors reproduced. In fine condition, with the original plastic dustwrapper.

IX and XI, have detached boards and loss at spines. Bookblocks are sound, a.e.g. Text and illustrations are clean and complete, including an index at the font of each volume. Offered as is.

Arranged and printed at The Cheltenham Press, New York City: title page printed in black and red; text is printed in black, with a running title at the top of most pages and some initial captitals printed in red. Internally clean. Wrappers show moderate soiling over all and shallow edge-chipping, with front wrapper detached. The text comprises a brief overview of the physical changes and renaming of streets which accompanied the reclamation of land and the creation of the Back Bay section of Boston, Massachusetts. A good copy.

One is a short note concerning the recipient's relatives in an issue of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Rceord, and the next, at two pages, is a note of thanks for the recipient's correspondence and her son's aid in preparing the book.
