London: Charles Ollier, 1846. Very good in green cloth binding, with some bumping to corners and heavier at the spine, university bookplate and a few remnants of card pocket. Still very presentable and quite uncommon in commerce.. First edition (but see below). Chapter IV of John Carter's Binding Variants in English Publishing 1820-1900 (London: Constable & Co Ltd, 1932) revolves around binding variants of this book. Carter notes several different binding variants and calls it "the prize exhibit in my collection of [binding variant] puzzles." Id. at 62. However, the copy here appears to be anomalous - it has both the 1846 Ollier title page and the 1846 Ollier advertisements - but the binding is not any of Carter's four variants. Rather it appears to be the Hex5 "pansy" cloth introduced in the mid-1860s. Good plus in publisher's red cloth with paper title panel to spine, with some wear to extremities, tanning of paper and wear, loss and age-darkening to paper spine panel.. From the library of George MacDonald with his bookplate to the front pastedown. In addition to MacDonald's ownership, this volume comes from the library of Maude Egerton King with her bookplate on the flyleaf. Ms. King was a friend of Greville Macdonald (and niece of George MacDonald by marriage), the son of George Macdonald, and it appears to have come into her possession in 1906, one year after George MacDonald's passing. Inscription to Ms. King, in what appears to be Greville MacDonald's hand, dated 1906. 12mo. 252pp.

New Haven: Printed and Published by S. Babcock, 1841. Very good with dampstaining throughout.. Pleasing moral chapbook intended for children, with eleven wood engravings in the contents and throughout the green pictorial wraps. Wrappers feature engravings of children engaged in leisurely activities, with one engraving appearing to depict baseball. 24mo. [5], 6-24pp.

Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1771. The first Baskerville Bible to be printed in Birmingham and one of only two Bibles published by Baskerville. A sumptuous printing in folio with 10 engraved plates. Very good in modern speckled full calf, with contents generally clean with light scattered foxing, one leaf with closed tear.

Very good in original blind-stamped green cloth, top edge gilt, remainder untrimmed, gilt lettering to spine, light rubbing and bumping to extremities, prior owner bookplate and label of former ABA president and successor to Commin's shop, Alan G. Thomas, to front pastedown. In a very good yellow clamshell box lined with black felt.. First edition, with handwritten address label and ALS from Sumner to Horace Commin (a well-known Bournemouth bookseller who was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association) pasted to the front free endpaper. Sumner was an early member of the Arts and Crafts movement, who later rabidly pursued local amateur archaeology. Dublin: Sold by William Watson, and Son, No. 7 Capel-Street, Printer to the cheap [sic] Repository for Religious and Moral Tracts, and by the booksellers, chapmen, and hawkers, in town and country, 1803. Very good in much later printed wraps, with some page toning, and staining to title page.. Scarce Dublin printing of the second part of More's story, first issued as an English-printed Cheap Repository tract in 1796 (Spinney 81), as William Watson and Son were Dublin printers to the Cheap Repository from 1795. ETSC gives a possible earlier date of "after 1797?". Bradshaw provides the same date, and notes the William Watson and Son imprint was for the period 1796-1803. London: Printed for E. Newbery, the corner of St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1796. Very good in contemporary tree sheep, rubbed, rebacked preserving old spine, one corner repaired, and occasional scattered light soiling.. Second edition, but the first illustrated edition with wood-engraved illustrations and vignettes by and after John Bewick. The publisher's advertisement apologizes for the delay in publication, as Bewick was ill, and subsequently died prior to publication, this being advertised as his final work. 12mo. x, 221pp., [1]. Scarce attractive hand-colored engraving game of the goose consisting of sixty-three numbered spaces arranged in a spiral. Each of the numbered compartments depicts a fable from Jean de La Fontaine. Parma: Bodoni, 1794. One of a very few Bodoni printings in English. Bodoni "set what was, in general, to be the standard book style of the world until the appearance of William Morris." Preece, Typography, Encyclopædia Britannica. William Morris "disliked Bodoni's types, [and Morris's followers] have stigmatized them as the acme of ugliness, that Bodoni has been responsible for all the bad printing produced since his types droves the Caslon letters from the stage of popular favor." First edition of Monk Lewis's translation, from the German, of Zschokke's sensational gothic romance Abällino, der grosse Bandit, first published in 1793. In Coleridge's view, this work exhibited the "wonder of effects produced by supernatural power, without the means," and the plot follows the adventures of a banished and starving aristocrat who seeks employment as a hired assassin. 8vo. viii, 340pp., [4, errata and ads]. The son of the far more famous Benjamin Rush, James Rush was the fourth treasurer of the United States. A trained physician, after his wife passed away in 1857, he left his public pursuit and focused more on psychological interests, leading to the 900+ page volume offered here. See Dictionary of Early American Philosophers, pg. 916-18.

Boston: D. Lothrop and Company, 1882. First thus. Very good in publisher's green cloth boards with blind and gilt stamping, with some wear to spine and slight cocking.. This copy is from the Fern Glen Series and carries a different title, but its contents almost exactly mirror "A Children's Year" which was first published in London in 1847. OCLC 10109609 reflects a New York printing also in 1847. However, the Fern Glen Series was largely produced in the 1870s and the instant binding and catalog mentioning an 1882 release largely confirms that to be the case, perhaps utilizing old sheets with a new title and binding to reinvigorate a weak seller. 12mo. 8, 9-257pp., + 15 page catalogue. Not in Woodring. NCBEL III, 1286 for the English title.

[n.p. likely London], 1903. Good plus with some foxing, tears to edges with minor loss not affecting text, vertical crease.. Scarce broadside announcing the visit of King Victor Emmanuel III and Queen Elena of Italy to England in November of 1903. Likely hastily prepared, the text is replete with spelling errors ("Myjesties" and "majesttes" for majesties, among others). This example is similar to the floral motifs found in Sarah Burgess printed napkins, but ours is without any identifying imprint. Broadside.
