Description:
Los Angeles: Balloon Route Publishing Co., 1906. Oblong octavo. [40] pp. comprised almost entirely of local photographs and ads. Publisher’s stapled wrappers with an oval window in the front which displays the trolley on the first page, cover with orange lettering and decorations. A most attractive copy and the earliest that we could find (the first copy in OCLC dates from 1907). The Balloon Route excursions were organized to promote ridership on the Los Angeles and Pacific Railway, which until 1904, did only a very small business. Under the direction of Mr. C.M. Pierce, the tours were created, marketed aggressively to tourists via local hotels, and became extremely popular, especially the Los Angeles Balloon Route Excursion, so named for the "balloon" shape of its route; often as many as 18 cars in one day would be called up. Passengers boarded the trolley cars at the Hill Street station, and began the all-day 101-mile excursion with a stop in Hollywood, followed by a visit to the studio of Paul… Read More
