Locke speculates that multiple issues of this edition should exist given the popularity. His research indicated a possible issue point being the presence of the text 'The right of translation is Reserved' on later issues [Locke, Spectrum 1:p13]. Seven issues from October 1926 to October 1927 - publication seems sporadic. Beau was a precursor of sorts to the so-called men's magazines such as Esquire. Roth, the editor (and contributor) was famously jailed for his publications. Of particular interest in this regard is the March 1927 issue which was surpressed due to it 'dripping with nudes'. Evidently hyperbole given that the only real nude in there is the Spare which is still pretty tame really, that said, the original auction listing for this specific copy from 2006 suggests it's the February 1927 that was surpressed. It wouldn't be until six years later that he published, with PS Publishing, a full-length book. Part of the A.E. Coppard Prize for Long Fiction series. The piece found Hill his first award (he has since won the Stoker Award, the BFA and the Locus). An important book for a Hill collector. The present copy signed to the cover without inscription.
