Extraordinary rare signed manuscript with photograph; a most intriguing manuscript bound in marbled boards with handmade label on front. 8 x 10.5 inches. It begins with pasted down photo of Laurence Housman and others at a table at the club dinner [Research suggests that his brother is seated to his right]. Two pages of an original handwritten poem in Housman's hand on lined paper follow. The poem relates the joys of the dinner but is primarily a rant against the War, the author having come fresh off a ship, "Relaxed from the weight. all horror and hate,/of Europe's bloody necropholists,/ I tucked in my knees, quite snugly at ease,/ With dramatists, painters, and novelists.... The crowd at said dinner is diverse, many nationalities and races, and Housman asks, Why cannot there some great evangelist come/ And knock sense in the heads of… Read More

Description:
Hamilton, Ontario/Montreal, Quebec. Very Good. 1888. Remarkable archive of 58 handwritten manuscript diaries covering 1888 - 1944 (1922 includes a travel diary) authored by Private James R. Adams, of the famed red-coated 13th Battalion of Infantry (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada). Beginning in 1888, age 25, James does more than detail his adult life on paper he actually writes a history of the Canadian textile industry and the Ontario Cotton Mills Company (a name that changed a number of times and eventually to the Canadian Colored Cotton Mills company), a Hamilton based company that gained fame on a number of fronts. [Biographic notes on the company at the end of the listing.] The first diary begins with only the odd financial and business note. It actually takes James a couple of years, 3 or 4, before he begins to use the diaries more fully beyond business appointments, prices of commodities, contacts made and the odd news item. As he ages he does more and writes more but he does not make… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1789. Four very warm letters from patients obviously post-operative all declaring the utmost respect and thanks to Professor Chopart. One letter is clearly signed Lalouette and the first of March 1789. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world," he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100,000 books and at least 60,000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases, Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Visiting scholars, driven to distraction, would spend… Read More

WAYNE COUNTY NEW YORK NY. Good+. 1903. Leatherette. Group of three handwritten diaries (1903, 1907, 1912) kept by this Civil War veteran who lived and farmed in Wayne County, New York. Bindings and contents in very good condition. approx 6" x 3" 3 volumes 103pp in all written legibly in pencil. At the end of each volume is a detailed ledger of expenses, yielding more details of farming. The author's style is eccentric, semi-literate, and very flavorful. For example: "Went over to the Collins Berring [burying] ground Mr. Wells was agointo put up some Hed Stones for Roswell and Matilda"; &c., &c. Together, the three diaries give a comprehensive picture of life, running a small-but-prosperous farm and orchard in upstate New York (near Lake Ontario) at the turn of the 20th century, as reported by a simple, unemotional but thorough man who does not identify himself. The author is fairly well off, hiring a man or two to help with the field work almost every day,… Read More

Description:
Near Rochester, New York. Good+. 1928. Devotees of the art of the diarist will find nirvana with Ellen Wilson. Each of the four diaries in this archive was received as a gift from intimate and far-flung family so-well known is Ellen's passion for writing in her diary. It is her sister, best friend and confessor and recorder of all events important to Ellen's world - local and international. She is a huge fan of Charles Lindbergh and some months it seems that his travels, exploits and tragedies are foremost in Ellen's daily entries. At one point she exclaims she had never been interested in South or Central America until she began following Lindbergh's Central American tour. Distances, feats and accomplishments are all annotated. Here's a wonderful quote from Ellen which I think sums it all up: [New Year Day 1940: after a long write up of the day's events] "....then I had a short rest then did my first writing in this my new 1940 diary. I keep a diary because I… Read More

Description:
BloOMINGBURG OHIO OH. Good+. 1906. On offer is a sensational family diary lot in this collection of 16 diaries, with each being completely full of handwritten entries. All of these diaries belonged to C.W. Larrimer of Bloomingburg Ohio. They start in 1906 when he's 44 and the last diary is 1921. Cursory examination reveals he's a cattle rancher, an assessor, (at least in the month of April) and a jack of all trades. He loves to travel and ends up taking several trips all over Ohio, and then in 1915 takes a trip to California and another one to Cuba in 1917. He also loves his auto, transporting and picking up folks all the time. In fact he makes several trips to Indianapolis for the races. Very interesting that all the diaries are full of handwritten entries, even when he's sick. In fact he gets so sick he has to go in for an operation at the Battle Creek Hospital and infirmary. He's sick for many weeks and still writes "sick" in his journal, not missing a day of… Read More

Description:
VERSAILLES, FRANCE, 1792. Archive of two (2) handwritten letters, both dated January 14th, 1792, both physically attached at the bottom left corner with sealing wax. Very interesting: The first letter, beautifully penned, whose author's signature is indecipherable yet whose status as a 'ancient surgeon to the King' is foremost in presentation, tells of the story of a young boy named Colinot. The boy has been severely injured to the point of blood building up under his eye lids and that he required many sutures to the head and around the nose. The second letter, (in a much rougher handwriting style than the refined Chiel Surgeon), by M. DeLaBique recounts the same injuries, but as told to him by a M. George LaFleur, they were acquired in a street brawl between a group of young boys. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including… Read More

In these 12 letters (all but one written to Bruen and with their original envelopes) Bruen writes about and responds to the tremendous changes occurring in 1960s America and the struggle for civil rights for African Americans. All but two letters are complete. Most telling of the letters is the one in which Bruen writes. He writes it in response to someone asking for advice on how to inspire a young person. Bruen writes, "…Make him know that you are proud of him even though his skin is colored.
