Description:
An illuminating witness to nearly a century of trials and research on the clinical use of opium and morphine. These twelve titles explore the chemistry, pharmacology, dosage, administration, and effects of opium and its derivatives. When read in chronological order, the overall narrative begins effusive and optimistic about the medicinal applications of the drug, then attempts to reconcile the narcotic's demonstrated danger by establishing a non-toxic dosage, and ends with warnings about abuse, addiction, and overdose. OCLC locates only 1 copy of Nos. 1, 6, 11 and 12 at Harvard; otherwise no copies of the others in America.
1. DEROSNE, Charles Louis. Memoire sur l'opium, lu à la Société de Pharmacie. [Paris: n.p., 1803]. 8vo. Modern wrappers. First separate printing. Derosne, a Parisian pharmacist, reports on his experiments in isolating morphine crystals from opium. G&M, 1838.3.

Frankfurt: Varrentrapp und Wenner, 1806. FIRST EDITION. With 5 engraved plates (4 duplicates in outline) by G. Rücker and J. C. Eckardt after drawings by C. Köck. Contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards. A fine uncut copy. First edition of a magnificent anatomical study of the human ear by Soemmerring (1755-1830), one of the most famous anatomists of the early nineteenth century. According to Choulant-Frank, "this work was produced at the request of Professor Lichtenberg of Göttingen, to furnish him greatly enlarged reproductions `for his lectures on physics. Soemmerring, with the aid of Köck, at once undertook the task. Specimens of such enlargements were cast for Göttingen, Bamberg, and Utrecht, but before Soemmerring had a chance to make a cast for himself, the forms, through some accident, were spoiled. After that Soemmerring and Köck, now perfectly familiar with the subject, worked out pictorial representations instead of plastic models . . . they represent the parts in… Read More
