Tbe book speaks of the high mortality rates in england at that time. It also refers to the lack of registration of births and deaths of the people of ireland so that accurate pictures of the movement of the Irish cannot be given. There are comments about street cleaning, the disgrace of the city markets, sewers, removal of dead animals, etc. An altogether fascinating book on thre city in 1860 - but especially so for its comments vs England. The change of inhabitants in various areas has created unhealthy situations whereas they were formerly healthy. People were living in underground cellars and tenament houses. London had prohibitions against the cellars at this time. The book discusses the strikes by laborers and the causes, Public places were being used as dumping grounds, sale of street manure, slaughter houses in the city, livery stabes and their conditions. Filled with statistical tables and comments on same - this is an awesome look back to the 1860' in New york and in some cases London and Paris.
