The scene depicts horse trading at Smithfield Market from the south side of west Smithfield - looking north to Smithfield Bar and St John Street. C. Lewis aquatinted the view but for forms sake the name of his father F.C. also appeared on the plate. Charles George Lewis (1808–80) was an English engraver. The second son of Frederick Christian Lewis (1779–1856), the painter and engraver, and brother of John Frederick Lewis (1786–1836), the bookbinder, he was born at Enfield, Middlesex, on 13 June 1808. He was instructed in drawing and engraving by his father. Lewis retired in about 1877, and died suddenly from apoplexy at his residence at Felpham, near Bognor, on 16 June 1880. He was buried in Felpham churchyard. Jacques-Laurent Agasse (1767-1849) was an animal and landscape painter from Switzerland. Born in Geneva, Agasse… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam,, [1644-55].. 510 by 610mm. (20 by 24 inches).. Five engraved maps with fine original hand colour, heightened with gold, French and Latin text to verso. A fine set of Blaeu's maps of the world and the four known continents. The Blaeu family popularised the carte-a-figure style of cartography, surrounding their maps with borders showing the native inhabitants of the country and city views. The four continents are shown in this style, with a border of views of major cities at the top and couples wearing the costume of their region at the sides. The border of the world map contains personifications of the four elements and four seasons at the sides, views of the seven wonders of the ancient world at the bottom, and the planets personified as classical deities at the top. In the world map, one of the earliest to use the Mercator projection, Blaeu has chosen not to show California as an island, as it often is on contemporary publications. He does, however, show North America separated from… Read More

A set of four prints of the River Thames, produced for Joseph Farington's series 'History of the River Thames'. Farington made 76 drawings of the course of the Thames, which required some negotiation: his wife's cousin, Horace Walpole, wrote to the Earl Harcourt asking for permission for Farington to sketch on his land. There was some delay between the drawings and publication while a suitable author was found to provide the accompanying text; Farington records in his diary on 15th July 1793 that publication "will now go on uninterruptedly as Mr. Coombe (sic) has promised to supply... manuscript as wanted" (Farington). Description:
Amsterdam,: Nicolaas Vischer,, [c1700].. 558 by 920mm. (22 by 36.25 inches).. Engraving with etching on two sheets joined. The Dam Square or Dam, is the principal square in Amsterdam. The view is taken from the west, with the Town Hall (now the Koninklijk Paleis or Royal Palace) to the left and the now demolished Waag (or Weighing House) at the centre. The sqaure originally faced onto the landing wharfs along Damrak, which at that time would have been busy with ships. The town hall was opened on 29 July 1655 by Cornelis de Graeff, the mayor of Amsterdam. The main architect was Jacob van Campen, who took control of the construction project in 1648. It was built on 13,659 wooden piles and cost 8.5 million gulden. As the Dam was principally a market square, with goods being unloaded from the Damrak, the Waag (weigh house) was essential to maintain the correct weights and measures of goods. The Waag was demolished in demolished in 1808 by order of Louis Bonaparte who, upon taking up residence in the… Read More

Amsterdam,: Willem Blaeu,, 1608 [but 1612].. 1320 by 1800mm. (52 by 70.75 inches).. Large engraved wall map, on four sheets joined, with traces of original colour, decorative boarder of the local populace, and major ports, together with descriptive text, title in manuscript, and engraved foliate border, some significant loss to map and text. Blaeu's landmark map of Africa, which was "of such importance that for the next 100 years numerous mapmakers throughout Europe... copied [it] in both design and content" (Betz). The map of Africa depicts the European conception of the continent at the dawn of the seventeenth century, an especially interesting juncture when the coastlines were well-explored, but its heart remained an enigma. Blaeu was influenced by Giacomo Gastaldi's large map of 1564, which was copied in Antwerp by Cornelis De Jode, as well as Abraham Ortelius's maps of 1595. He also considered the maps present in Filippo Pigafetta's book on the Congo, based on the explorations of Duarte Lopes… Read More

Paduan astronomer, astrologer and cartographer Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555-1617) was so well respected within the field of mathematics that in 1588 he was chosen for the chair at the University of Bologna over Galileo Galilei. While also serving as official astrologer to the court of the Duke of Mantua, Vincenzo I, he devised his own planetary theory and developed extremely accurate trigonometric tables which were applied to the geometry of spheres. Vincenzo was also the patron of Magini's greatest cartographical project, 'Atlante geografico d'Italia', an atlas that he intended to include a map of every Italian region accompanied by historical notes. Amsterdam,: Joannes Covens, Cornelis Mortier,, [1730].. 565 by 925mm (22.25 by 36.5 inches).. Engraving with etching, on two sheets joined. Panorama of Amsterdam from the sea. The view is dominated by the numerous vessels on the IJ. These range from a large East Indiaman, to small packets, and rowing boats, and amply demonstrates Amsterdam's source of wealth and power. The view of the city in the background is almost an after thought, however, the engraver has managed to depict the city in fine detail, and a numbered key below lists 27 landmarks. These include the naval arsenal, the Oosterkerk, the Oude Kerk, the Montelbaanstoren, the Zuiderkerk, and the Noorderkerk, among others. [Siena,: Matteo Florimi,, c1600].. 397 by 525mm (15.75 by 20.75 inches).. Double-page engraved map, minor expert repairs to verso. Only edition of this rare, separately-published map of North and South America. Arnoldo di Arnoldi (d.1602) was a Flemish born cartographer who lived and worked for most of his life in Italy in the workshop of the famous geographer Giovanni Antonio Magini. Burden reports that in early 1600 he moved to Sienna, where he produced two world maps (a large-scale ten-sheet map and a smaller two-sheet map) as well as a set of the four continents, of which this is one. He died soon after. Arnoldi and his publisher, Matteo Florimi, are identified on his map of Europe, accompanied by a statement that his maps were taken from Ortelius' 'Theatrum'. This statement is, upon closer examination, at odds with the evidence. Instead, Arnoldi's work has far more in common with Giovanni Battista Mazza's c1589 map of America. New Guinea is shown here as an island rather than as an extension… Read More

[Rome,: Henricus van Schoel,, 1609].. 425 by 561mm (16.75 by 22 inches).. Double page engraved map, minor expert paper repairs to margins and central fold. A separately-published Lafreri school map of the Americas, the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, extending to Asia in the west, and Europe in the east with a large land mass labelled 'Terra Australis Incognita' in the south. It is decorated with sea-monsters, a large galleon, and a fine mannerist strapwork cartouche. The map is derivative of Arnoldo di Arnoldi's c1600 map of the same title. Van Schoel's map is detailed and mostly accurate. For example, California is correctly shown as a peninsula, and New Guinea as a separate island; however, Terra Australis, the great unknown south land, awaits discovery. To cover up his lack of knowledge of southern geography, Terra Australis is partially and cleverly covered by the title cartouche. Burden notes that there are a few minor differences between this map and Arnoldi's. For example, in van Schoel's… Read More

New York City,: Council Against Intolerance in America,, 1940.. 895 by 1378mm. (35.25 by 54.25 inches).. 895 by 1378mm, chromolithographed map, mounted on linen. Emma Bourne's 1940 pictorial map was published in the year prior to the United States' entry into World War II, when nationalist and isolationist sentiment was on the rise. Bourne takes a politically progressive stance against these feelings of xenophobia and nativism, instead promoting the Council Against Intolerance in America's mission to encourage "tolerance through education," and "to counteract the propaganda of racial and religious prejudice, which seeks to divide America." Bourne achieves the Council Against Intolerance's goal in a number of ways.
