Book and dj are virtually new. No faults were found. There is an interesting inscription and signature, along with a sketch of a bird in flight, on the title page. It does not appear to be by the author. Rather, based on the inscriiption, it appears to be from an artist, perhaps from an artist covered in the book. We are not familiar with the world of sporting prints and could not identify the signature. We would like to find out. See attached photo.

We could not find any faults whatsoever. . This is a volume from the Boston Publishing Company's "Scott's Waverly Novels, The Household Edition, With Woodcuts and Steel Engravings. By Subscription Only." We could not find any of the books from this Boston Publishing Co. series for sale on any of the major sites we looked at. No volume number is given. The book is in excellent condition. Covers are of a silk-like covering over boards, a dark red covering of the cover boards and lighter coloring on the spine, with embossed black lettering and design in excellent condition. Good quality woodcuts and engravings are scattered throughout the book.

Book is like new. Only fault we could find is that page 89, near the top right corner is creased from a fold. The author worte "Best Wishes" with his full signature and date 2003 on the first inside fly-leaf page.

Contains a 96 pages of water color painting - 32 pages in color - by Alfred Jacob Miller. The Foreword is an account of the discovery of the Miller collection by Mae Reed Porter. DeVoto's book on the mountain men is considered to be his best and most important book. The book was the winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize.
