Indianapolis, 1938. Typed Letter Signed. Paper. Very good. Letter from August Samuel Duesenberg, American automotive engineer who built racing engines and set early automotive speed records. Engines designed and built by him and his brother, Fred Duesenberg, won the 1921 French Grand Prix and three Indianapo. Letter previously folded, light toning. Marginalia in pencil from the recipient, noting that he called A.S. Duesenberg. Duesenberg was inducted into the Auto Racing Hall of Fame, the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. He served for 3-years, before being asked by President Johnson to serve as United States Ambassador to the United Nations, filling the vacancy left by the untimely death of Adlai Stevenson.

Two-page letter, written on "Army and Navy Young Men's Christian Association" letterhead. Framed with gray matte, archival glass. This letter is written to "George" in New York. The Corporal spends most of the letter detailing camp life at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, noting that a "about 20,000 soldiers are here at present and over a thousand a day come in." He describes the offices as: "nearly all civilian doctors, who have had training and got in the officer's reserve corps. They are very decent, but occasionally make "bulls." Also included is the republication of this speech from the papers of John Valentine, dated 1950. An exceptionally scarce pamphlet, with no mention in Halter and no auction records except for this copy. The War Crisis speech contained in this pamphlet would enter the popular lexicon as the "Stab In The Back" Speech. Delivered at the commencement ceremonies of the University of Virginia, President Roosevelt admonished Italy for declaring war on France and entering World War II. His remark that: "On this tenth day of June, 1940, the hand that held the dagger was struck into the back of its neighbor," was initially opposed by his advisors, but on the train ride to Charlottesville he changed his mind and made headlines.
