Description:
London: J. Nichols, 1781. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 1st edition, 1st printing anywhere of Herschel's paper (read Apr. 26, 1781) announcing his sighting of Uranus, the first new planet discovered since antiquity. Herschel thought what he had seen was doubtless a planet, and excitedly showed it to his sister Caroline, but as an amateur, and not a member of The Royal Society (the handcuffs on progress are made from red tape), he modestly titled his article with reserve, and referred to the object in his paper as a comet, but he included specifics pointing out its location in the solar system and assumed other, more trusted, astronomers could find it and decide what it was with certainty. And they did so quickly and confirmed it was no comet but a new planet. The public was exhilarated, telescope sales increased fortyfold, Herschel became a rock star, and George III appointed him "The King's Astronomer." Our book is the entire, 582-page vol. 71 of the Royal Society's Transactions, with… Read More

Description:
London: John Murray, 1828. First Edition. Boards. Near fine. Adventures of Hajji Baba": 3 vols.  1st edition of the first peek into Persia, and the best ever capturing of it, in that time, fact or fiction.  1st issue with the dedication to Dr. Fundgruben intact.  Original boards, sympathetically rebacked with identical gray paper, original paper labels laid down (vol. I label 70% chipped, vol. III label with a smaller chip), owner's name on paste downs, else fine.  With a custom 1/4 morocco box. "Hajji Baba of Ispahan in England": 2 vols.  1st edition of the sequel.  Original boards and paper labels, joints worn but holding, spine tips chipped, owner's name in pencil to title pages, still very good and unrepaired. At a pressing point of British colonial power, the Crown established a mission in Persia with an 1809 treaty of alliance. In 1810 they sent James J. Morier as Secretary of Embassy, and from 1814 to 1816 he served as Chargé d'Affaires. The choice was a brilliant one. Sir James… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan, 1886. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 1st edition of the replication of Carroll's original manuscript for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, with his original title, his own 37 illustrations, and reproducing his own handwriting. This edition differs from the published book in that Macmillan had Carroll change the title, delete a few personal references, and add 2 chapters, and they hired a professional illustrator, but our book is the original. Presentation copy from the author to the publisher, inscribed (to Emma Macmillan), "Mrs. Macmillan from the author" and dated in January, the month that all the earliest presentation copies were inscribed. A bright and beautiful copy, near fine in original cloth. Best copy in the world? Probably.

Description:
New York: E.P. Dutton, 1960. Uncorrected proof. Unbound sheets stapled into the finished dustwrapper. A little soiled, near fine. The Detroit-born author was educated at North Carolina's Black Mountain College. This is his first, and surprisingly, most immediately successful novel (*Midnight Cowboy* received good reviews, but sold poorly until the success of the film). *All Fall Down* was made into a John Frankenheimer-directed film starring Warren Beatty and Eva Marie Saint. A very scarce issue.

Description:
1870. good. Etching on paper, 1st published in 1799, this issue ca. 1875 (later ones are dogfood). Plate 66 from Los Caprichos, the sheet 8" X 10" the image 4 7/8" X 7 3/8" (the full margins are not pictured). Titled at the base, plate number at the upper right. Good. Unframed. A supernatural allegory of a witch and her cat flying over the landscape on a crippled devil who looks like a surgically humanized warthog from the island of Dr. Moreau. The theme is conflict, much smaller than, but not unlike that between matter and anti-matter, or between education and disaster. Ref: Delteil 103. Harris 1964 101.III?

Description:
London: Macmillan, 1888. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 2 vols. 1st edition (vol. II contains 2 short stories, Louisa Palant and The Modern Warning). Original dark green cloth (almost British racing green). A fine set, razor sharp, extraordinary in the context of a 650 copy 1st printing, and I seldom see common Victorian double deckers that look like this anymore. James was always confident with small lives and big themes, so in The Aspern Papers he tries his commanding hand at Everything you Always Wanted to Know About Bibliomania but Were Afraid to Ask. An American editor, obsessed with the work of an early 19th century Romantic poet, Jeffery Aspern, travels to Venice seeking the love letters that Aspern wrote to his mistress, Miss. Bordereau. He devises a false identity to veil his aims and finds her living in poverty with her niece (Tina), alienated from the world. He becomes their lodger and since Bordereau wishes to protect her niece's future, he eventually takes Tina into his confidence. As… Read More

Description:
1940. Very good. 12 numbered pages, rectos only (8" X 10 1/4"), with the author's ink corrections, additions, changes, and deletions throughout, all in black ink. Minor edgewear, scattered soiling and creases, and rust stains from a previous paperclip, two holes from a staple, still very good condition. This story was published in the anthology, Today and Forever: Stories of China (NY, John Day, 1941).  It's a tale of westerner travels within China, and just what you'd want, because her 1938 Nobel Prize was "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China.".
