Description:
Orig. pub. New York 1888. Reprinted 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2015. (ii), xvi, 344 pp., map, index In his trilogy about the men who settled the Old Southwest, the author develops the thesis that these men, under the leadership of John Sevier, Isaac Shelby, and James Robertson, not only planted a civilization beyond the Alleghenies but exerted an important influence in shaping the ultimate destinies of this country. Two of these men, Sevier and Shelby, during the Revolution helped thwart the British plan to envelop and crush the Southern Colonies and then helped turn the tide of the Revolution at the Battle of King's Mountain. Acting together after the Revolution, the three men frustrated Spain's design to weaken the Union by creating a separate republic between the Allegheny Mountains and the Mississippi River. Had that plan been successful, it would have kept the vast region beyond the Mississippi a Spanish province. This work is the third and concluding volume of Gilmore's trilogy about… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. Montgomery 1872. Reprinted 1975, 1988. Print on Demand Edition 2013. (vi), 712 pp., index Willis Brewer, in this second comprehensive history of Alabama, created a work that Thomas M. Owen in his Bibliography (1898) called "the most valuable contribution to the history of the State yet made." In the first section of the book, he gives a brief historical review of the history of the state from 1540 to 1872 dealing with exploration, the Indians, natural resources, economic development, the territorial period, and state politics in general. In the second section entitled "The Counties of Alabama," Brewer presents the history of each county giving its creation, its location, its aboriginal history, its resources, names of county officials over the years, and approximately five hundred biographical sketches of prominent citizens. The third section entitled "The War Between the States," presents a brief sketch of each regiment of infantry and cavalry with the names of field officers, staff… Read More

Description:
An original publication, 1995. xx, 146 pp., illus., index This book is the result of research done by Ellen Clinkscales Smith Rippy on her Smith and Sullivan family lines. Much of her work on the Sullivan history was facilitated by research previously available from other members of the family on the Sullivans, Brownlees, Dunklins, Hueys, Walkers, Clinkscales, Moorheads, and Gilkeys. Research into the Smith line was made more difficult because of some apparent conflicts in the line of descent and a lack of availability of authentic records. But, she finally placed the Smiths on the Broad River at Smith's Ford, in Cherokee County. John Smith was buried on this land and information on his headstone indicated that he had been born in Botetourt County, Virginia. Further research established that John's father was Henry Smith who had come to South Carolina from the Upper Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia. From the Smith's Ford location in South Carolina, children would later move into Anderson County and… Read More

Essentially, the book is a collection of sketches of the lives and activities of over 150 individuals during the Revolution. Included are articles on commanders, officers, soldiers killed in the war in the South, survivors of the Revolution, officers and soldiers of Lee's Legion, distinguished characters in civil life, the clergy, the French allies, naval officers, ladies on both sides, British officers, and general suffering and hardships of the troops and civilian population. While the book concentrates on people and events in South Carolina, there is material pertaining to North Carolina and Georgia, as well as other parts of the country. The book provides an interesting expression of the image of the American Revolution expressed during the 19th century and is a valuable document… Read More
