Description:
Los Angeles, California: ACLU of Southern California Gay Rights Chapter, 1980. Very good. Ten issues in various formats and paginations, all measuring around 11" x 8½", most are 8-16 pages. Publication sequence: Vol. 2, No. 3 (May 1977); 4 unnumbered issues (Jan 1978, Feb 1978, May 1978, Aug 1979); Vol. 4, Nos. 11-12 (Nov-Dec 1979); Vol. 5, Nos. 1, 3-4 (Jan 1 1980, Mar-Apr 1980). Generally very good or better: one issue with a 4" x 2" section excised and two tears to last leaf not affecting any text; a few issues toned with a bit of light edge wear and creasing. Founded in August 1976, the ACLU Gay Rights Chapter (later the ACLU Lesbian and Gay Rights Chapter) was the first ACLU chapter devoted exclusively to addressing the civil rights of the LGBTQ populace. The newsletters offered here went through various titles, in order, as follows: "ACLU Gay Rights Newsletter"; "ACLU of Southern California Gay Rights Newsletter"; "Gay Rights Newsletter"; and "Gay Rights Guardian." The collection provides… Read More

Description:
San Francisco and West Hollywood, California: National Gay Rights Advocates, 1988. Very good. First edition stated. 8 ½" x 5 ½". Stapled card wrappers. pp. [2], 32, [2]. Very good: wrappers dust soiled and heavily rubbed, internally fine. The National Gay Rights Advocates ("NGRA") was founded in 1978 and was the first public interest law firm for lesbians and gay men in the United States. By the time of this publication, it was active in every state in the country advocating in the areas of AIDS, employment discrimination, freedom of speech and domestic partnerships. This book is a product of the group's AIDS Civil Rights project, which started in 1985, and provided educational outreach in addition to its activism through the court system. This book contained a number of statements decrying discrimination based on AIDS from leaders across a broad spectrum. NGRA "hope[d] that the statements will convince employers, government officials and others to abandon policies which are discriminatory or… Read More

Description:
[Lawrence County, Alabama], 1825. Good. Single leaf measuring 9½" x 7¾". About good: portions had separated completely and were crudely repaired with tape at an early date; those repairs are now reinforced with archival tape. This is a manuscript challenge to a duel. It reads in full: Sir, the manner in which you have recently attempted to villify [sic] my character together in the personal insults I received from you on a late occasion compels me to insist on your giving me the only satisfaction which a Gentleman can accept of. I will expect you to meet me at 6 o'clock tomorrow morning in Mr. [Strains?] Field. I expect you to answer by my friend Mr. Pettigrew with whom you can arrange the terms. The author, William McCain, his opponent, Isaac Owen, and a penciled date written in a relatively modern hand give clues as to why this challenge was solicited. William McCain was the son-in-law of John Byler for whom the old Byler Road in Alabama was named. Byler Road was one of the first roads… Read More

Adz Gayzette, which ran from 1970-1972, was a free newspaper targeted to the San Francisco gay community. In addition to occasional news reporting, it provided a weekly calendar of events, classifieds and personals, an advice column and more. This "Directory Issue" has a centerfold spread listing around 100 gay friendly businesses in the San Francisco area. The locations of 80 of them are shown on three street maps. OCLC shows 11 institutions over three entries with physical copies of Adz Gayzette in the United States, though little information about which issues are held. Description:
Genova: Stamperia Casamara, Piazza 5 Lampadi, 1918. Very good +. 4 " x 3". Stapled printed thin card wrappers. Pp. 40. Very good plus: dust soiling and mild wear throughout; a few minor ink blurs and creases on leaves not affecting readability. This is an Italian-language almanac with specially issued wrappers for distribution in California. It was sponsored by the Banca Popolare "Fugazi", with locations in San Francisco, Oakland, and Santa Barbara, California and was likely distributed as a promotion to Italian communities in California. Giovanni (John) F. Fugazi (1838-1916) was born in Milan, Italy and emigrated to the United States the age of 16. He spent the next several years as an itinerant laborer before settling in San Francisco in 1869. There he founded San Francisco's first travel agency, Agenzia Fugazi. Before Fugazi's travel agency, Italian immigrants in San Francisco had no way of sending money back to their families. He owned the only vault in North Beach and many Italians asked… Read More

Description:
Rydal, Pennsylvania/Wildwood, New Jersey: The Ogontz School/Wilson G. Kent Co, 1928. Very good. 9¼" x 6¼". Limited to 44 copies, this being number 3. Decoratively embossed leather over thick boards with purple silk moire pastedowns, aeg. pp. 259, [15, blanks] + 56 tipped in silver gelatin photographs measuring 6" x 4". Very good: board edges heavily worn with areas of loss; lacks clasp; internally very good plus or better with hints of toning at extremities and near fine or better photographs with one loose. This is an elaborate yearbook for an elite private girl's school prepared for its honorary class member, the important poet-activist, Angela Morgan. The Ogontz School for Young Ladies began in Philadelphia in 1850 as the Chestnut Female Seminary. In 1883 it moved to Elkins Park and the Ogontz estate, which precipitated the name change. By the time of this yearbook, the school was owned by Abby Sutherland who moved the school to Abington Township, built a new campus, and separated the older… Read More

Description:
McDowell County, West Virginia: North Fork District Schools, 1921. Good. 11¼" x 7¾". Thin card wrappers. Pp. [108]. Good: covers heavily worn, separated from textblock and partially detached from each other; two images affected by large orange stains; some pages with moderate soiling, primarily at edges; one line of text blacked out with marker. This is a rare school district annual yearbook which provides a striking view into the segregation of schools. It also serves as a great reference for West Virginia schools and businesses. A foreword by the Superintendent of the North Fork district schools suggested that this book was "perhaps the first of its character and scope in the state." It listed the administrative staff of the district as well as goals for the upcoming year. There were photographic images of the faculty members of all of the district's schools: first the white teachers, then the Black. Student life was documented similarly, portraying segregation with compelling clarity. Pages… Read More

Description:
Detroit, Michigan: The H. O'Reilly Clint Co, 1930. Very good. 12¼" x 9¼". Sheet music. Pp. 6. Very good with moderate wear and light dust soiling. This is the sheet music for a composition "dedicated to the Booker T. Washington Memorial, Detroit, Mich." It features a full page illustrated image of Washington as well as striking cover art of "Lifting the Veil of Ignorance," a statue of Washington created by Charles Keck in the 1920s and which is on the grounds of Tuskegee Institute. We were unable to find any information about the music/lyrics or about the Booker T. Washington Memorial in Detroit for which it was composed, save one Detroit newspaper article found online that mentioned the "tiny Booker T. Washington Memorial Park, started in the 1920s by a group of Black lawyers." Rare documentation of a possibly lost memorial to Washington, coupled with previously unknown uplift music. A ghost of a project, with OCLC locating no copies; no mentions in numerous variants of Google searches, nor on… Read More

Description:
Taylor and Austin, Texas, 1936. Good +. 4½" x 6". String-tied commercial autograph book with 112 pages, 35 of which contain handwritten text. Good plus: wrappers moderately soiled and worn; scattered small stains to most pages. This is an autograph book compiled by a young woman attending Blackshear High School (BHS), Allyne E.B. "Polly" Lewis. BHS was the first high school for African Americans in Taylor, Texas. Lewis went on to a long career as a beloved schoolteacher and Baptist women's leader. The first school for Black students in Taylor opened around 1881 and operated under various names. In 1918, Oliver Lewis (O.L.) Price became principal of the "Col*red School" of Taylor; at the time there were five teachers and fewer than ten students in the school. Price renamed the school in honor of Edward L. Blackshear, the noted African American educator and president of Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College (now Prairie View A&M University). Price also served as president of the Ne*ro… Read More

Description:
San Jose, California: Phoenix Publications, 1977. Very good. 11" x 8½". Bifolium. pp. [12]. Very good: light edge wear; toned and dust-soiled. This is the first, and presumably only, issue of a periodical and promotional for the Gay Task Force of Central California (GTFCC). All we know about the GTFCC is found in an article in this issue which was apparently reprinted from the September 1, 1977 issue of the Bay Area Reporter ("BAR"). The GTFCC was originally founded by Eladio "Lucky" Guerrero in 1976 as "The Gay Liaison Task Force of Santa Clara County." After functioning for a year as an adjunct of the Human Relations Commission of Santa Clara County, it re-formed as this new entity in the hope of better "serv[ing] the needs of the gay community more effectively as a political association." That article also stated that The Avatar would grow to a sixty page magazine with a monthly press run of 10,000 copies. The printer of this issue, Ms. Atlas Press, was founded in 1975 by Johnie Staggs and… Read More
