Columbian Book Company, 1872. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Original green cloth, water spot approximately 1 inch in diameter below the vignette on the front cover, boards showing on tips and some edges, hinges strong, text clean and unmarked, overall a very good minus copy. First edition. Zamorano Eighty 61: "A highly interesting book by the first man, probably, who ever walked alone from one coast to the other. The author, an amateur ethnologist, describes vividly the country through which he traveled. Of particular value are his descriptions of southern California. He walked from Raleigh, N.C., to San Francisco, a distance of 3,556 miles. So keen were his observations of the Indian tribes of California that his notes were published some five years later by the U.S. Department of Interior.Afoot and Alone appeared in but one edition, but it became so popular and was so widely read that it is today almost impossible to find a fine copy." Columbia, Ohio, Columbia Press, 1932. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Pictorial red cloth, very good. First edition. Guns 1974: Scarce. It contains material on Billy the Kid.She was not afraid of him (Billy the Kid), she says, because she had met him earlier in Trinidad and had done him a favor for which he had promised never to bother her. She claims to have visited the Kid in jail May 16, 1882, nearly a year after his death, and she records his death as September 8, 1882. She says it was only then that she learned that his true name was William H. Bonney. His death, she says, ends the career of one who began his downward course at the age of twelve years by taking revenge for the insult that had been offered to his mother. The reprint omits some material that appears in the first printing. Dykes, Kid 181: Sister Blandina nursed a member of the Kids gang and saved the lives of Trinidads doctors by getting the grateful Kid to grant her a favor. The favor, of course, was the sparing of the lives… Read More
