This charming book features a different breed of dog for each letter of the alphabet. Clara Tice (1888-1973) was a notorious New York bohemian artist who began exhibiting her art from 1910. "Tice was apparently so highly regarded and so instantly recognizable as one of those 'queer artists' that her role in the first Greenwich Village Follies was simply to play herself. As 'Clara,' she stepped out onto the stage at the appointed time, outfitted in one of her typically bizarre bohemian ensembles, and conducted a 'quick chalk talk of nudes, bees… Read more

Description:
Digitally printed. Sepia-brown toned. Fine condition. Presented in a wooden silver frame. Size: 50 x 40 cm. (19½ x 15½ inches) From the Beken archive, printed digitally in Sepia-brown. Frank Beken was born in Canterbury, England in 1880. His father Alfred was a chemist and photographer. In 1888 the family moved to the Isle of Wight. The company "Beken & Son Ltd." was born and Frank was soon seen afloat in a dinghy, photographing the fine vessels that sailed the local waters. He quickly designed his own camera, which was more suited to take photographs at sea: it was made to withstand sea-water and was held in both hands, the shutter being fired by biting a rubber ball gripped tightly between the teeth. The beauty and splendour of sail has been captured by the lenses of the Beken family since those early days.

Description:
A Survey of the Cities of London & Westminster. John Strype., 1755.. Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Very good condition. Size: 38 x 24.5 cm. (15 x 9½ inches) John Stow's, A Survey of London, was first published in 1598, with a second edition following in 1603. Stow's most famous work, it is an evocative 'perambulation' of the streets of the Tudor capital, which forms the main framework of the book. The huge growth of the metropolis, the devastation wrought by the Great Fire of 1666 and the subsequent rebuilding of the City made an updating of the Survey highly desirable. It was to answer this need that John Strype (1643-1737), the ecclesiastical historian and biographer, published a new, hugely expanded version of Stow's Survey of London in 1720.
