London: Charles Griffin, 1908 First edition. Calculator on varnished thick card with three moving circular pieces of graduating size fastenedat the center with a brass rivet on a back-board (this measuring 6.5 inches square),with an accompanying text of 12 pages, stitched, as issued, all in fine condition, inoriginal slim cardboard box. It is unusual for such a comparatively earlycomputing machine to have survived in this condition. "The computer is an ingenious form of mechanical calculator for solving the numerousproblems connected with the power, size, and speed of steam engines of all kinds. Its action isbased upon the well-known principle of logarithmic calculation, the operations ofmultiplication and long division being effected mechanically by the addition and subtraction ofdistances proportional to the logarithms of the quantities represented..." Description:
[Los Angeles:] 1933 Mauve wrappers, stapled at spine, with title in black on front cover. . 5" x 3 ." 51 pp. . Frontispiece, with portraits of the officers of the Associated Women's Students of Occidental College, and other campus women leaders. Typographical vignette on title-page, decorative headbands. Wrappers slightly creased and lightly toned. Small chip and minor tear to crown of spine. Pages untrimmed. A very good, clean copy. The Ward Ritchie Press was founded in 1932, though Ritchie also produced a number of student publications. Ritchie graduated from Occidental College in 1928, and so it was understandable why he was asked to produce this handbook. In addition to being a sample of the master type-designer's early work, it is an interesting glimpse into the life of girls attending a good liberal arts college in the thirties. "The standard of Occidental womanhood has always been held high, and we are dependent upon you, the new women, to carry on its purpose…Occidental does not try to… Read More

Description:
Cambridge: At the University Library 1897 Large octavo. Dark blue cloth with gilt spine. Spine extremities lightly frayed, old bookplates and rubberstamps of Bedford College for Women on front pastedown and title-page. Aside from markings, a very good, tight copy, partially unopened. Baker (1866-1956) was a British mathematician who served as Lowndean professor of astronomy and geometry (1914–36). His principal interest was in the theory of algebraic functions and related topics, and later in partial differential equations (related to what would become known as solitons), and Lie groups. "His treatise contains a wealth of information, including many special (sometimes almost forgotten) results and examples which are again of great interest to geometers, analysts, and physicists" (Zentralblatt MATH Database 1931 – 2001).

A very good, bright copy of a scarce book Frederick Saunders (1807-1902) was a London-born librarian and writer, who relocated to New York in order to open a branch of his family's bookselling firm. He petitioned Congress for the passage of an act that sought to protect both American and British authors; though it was backed by George Bancroft, Henry Clay, William Cullen Bryant, and Washington Irving, it failed to pass. For a time, he was the editor of The New York Post and was the assistant librarian at the Astor Library, later becoming its head librarian. Description:
Recent blue decorative boards. . Octavo. This is one of the few papers which shows Babbage as a capable experimentalist and as a master of classification. During the period when Babbage was preoccupied with the construction of the calculating engine, he and John Herschel undertook to investigate the ten earthshaking discovery of Arago: a copper disc rotating next to a magnetic needle tends to "drag" the needle from its position of rest. In the course of this investigation Babbage and Herschel came very close to discovering electromagnetic induction, seven years before Faraday. They even went as far as concluding that time delay and magnetic change must be responsible for the rotation, but fell short of realizing that a totally new phenomenon need be postulated: the induction of eddy currents.
