Description:
Edinburgh: Printed [by Grant and Moir] for T. Brown..., 1793. 12mo (in 6s), 175 x 94 mms., pp. [iv], 281 [282 blank], including half-title, engraved portrait of Mary Queen of Scots as frontispiece, contemporary sheepskin, black leather label; front joint slightly wormed and cracked at top and base, top of spine chipped, corners a bit worn, but a good to very good copy. This appears to be a different work from one with the same title published by Kearsley in London in 1791, though both that volume and the present end with the accession of James I to the English throne. ESTC T163469 locates copies in BL, Glasgow, NLS (2); Library Company of Philadelphia, McMaster. A work with the same title was published by Kearsley in London in 1791, in two apparently different issues: ESTC T63355, with register vii,[1],309,[1]p; and T92232, with register viii,304p. Neither issue seems to have a portrait and was advertised for sale at three shillings, while the Edinburgh imprint was three shillings and six pence.

Description:
London: Printed for Darton and Harvey..., 1807. 12mo (in 6s), 138 x 85 mms., pp. 128 [129 - 132 adverts], contemporary sheepskin; several leaves sprung, rear hinge cracked, shaken in casing, corners a bit dog-eared, text giving every sign of frequent usage, binding rubbed, with contemporary ownership inscription, "Samuel Henson/ his Book/ 11mo 13th/ 1809" on the recto of the front free end-paper, "H.Venner" on the verso of the rear free end-paper, and "Daniel Henson/ His Book/ 1810" on the rear paste-down end-paper. Lindley Murray (1745 - 1826) published his English Grammar in 1795, with the Abridgment following shortly in 1797. Both proved to be far more successful than anyone anticipated. Both English Grammar and the Abridgment were published in numerous editions in the early 19th century, but very few seem to have survived, which is not too surprising for a school text-book.

FIRST EDITION of this abridgment. 8vo (in 4s), 173 x 108 mms., pp. [iii] iv - vii [vii Errata], 390, [3] 4 - 178, viii, [8 adverts], contemporary calf, red leather label; slight wear to joints and extremities, but a very good copy, with a ownership inscription on the recto of the front free end-paper that affirms a comment on the volume cited below: "Mary Weld/ Sales House Shepton Mallet Somersetshire/ This book belongs to the Monastery of the / Visitation of our Lady Sales House/ Shepton Mallet Somersetshire/ April 23d 1831." Mary Sales Weld was Mother Superior at the Monastery [sic] from 1810 to at least 1831. The Jesuit and Biblical scholar Joseph Reeve (1733–1820) wrote a number of ecclesiastical and theological works, but also turned out a rather good poem published in 1776, Ugbrooke Park. This abridgment proved to be popular and reached a fourth edition by 1795. However, not everyone was thrilled… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh, Printed by R. Fleming: And sold by A. Kincaid and A. Donaldson..., 1753. FIRST EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), 165 x 102 mms., pp. [iv], 450, 2 engraved plates, contemporary annotations and marks in text, which is slightly browned, amateurishly "bound" in sheepskin boards that are slightly larger than the text block, crude backstrip. Hutchinson (1674 - 1737) was cured of lead poisoning by Dr. John Woodward and later pursued a career as a natural philosopher. Most of his scientific inquiries, however, were heavily tinged with religion, and he seems almost to think that the Old Testament contains clues and information about natural science. His works were popular with the sort of reader who found John Wesley's views on electricity and other scientific phenomena convincing. This abstract of several of his works is attributed to Robert Spearman and/or George Horne, Bishop of Norwich. ESTC T99488 locates 10 copies in British libraries, and Essex Institute, Johns Hopkins, Clark,… Read More

A Minutie [?Paris] [Prault] 1744. FIRST EDITION. 4to, 286 x 210 mms., pp. [viii], 83 [84 blank], engraved frontispiece, and nine other full-page engraved plates after François Boucher by Pierre-Quentin Chedel, two vignettes designed and engraved by Charles-Nicholas Cochin and a cul-de-lampe, contemporary calf, spine richly gilt, red leather label; corners, top and base of spine worn, but a good copy. The plates first appeared in Comte de Tessin's Faunillane, ou l'Infante Jaune, published in 1741. Tesssin, having had only a few copies printed of this book, later gave the plates to the publisher Laurent Prault, who then had the fun of finding a text that might serve be proper for the plates. As Christies noted in the auction of another copy in June, 2013, "He proposed the idea to three writers, Caylus, Voisenon and Duclos, and it was Duclos' text which was finally chosen. This is thus one of the earliest cases of a non-explanatory text being commissioned to accompany a set… Read More

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), 205 x 128 mms., pp. 370, original boards, uncut; boards a bit knocked about and soiled, spine defective, an unprepossessing copy of a book as issued. Sharp (1735 - 1813) published over sixty works in his lifetime, though he is often remembered today for his association with Wilberforce in the attempt to abolish the slave trade. London, Printed for the Author, and to be Sold by J. Barns in Pallmall, W. Taylor..., E. Curll..., and G. Strahan in Cornhill, 1712. ?FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 188 x 114 mms., pp. [viii], xxvi [xxvii - xxviii subscription proposal], 108, with "End of the First Part" on lower margin of last page, slightly later panelled sheepskin, neatly rebacked; no label. Gregory's work was intended to introduce a larger work which was never published. The work is dedicated to the [Henry Somerset, Second] Duke of Beaufort (1684 - 1714), who is extolled as a "Patron of Learning." ODNB rather more prosaically reports that he established a "high-tory drinking society, the Honourable Board of Loyal Brotherhood, in 1709." He was active in the ministry of Robert Harley. The text makes clear, that Gregory did indeed many of the ancient sites that he describes, giving measurements of various sepulchers for example. Curll's name in the imprint is somewhat curious, as this is not… Read More

London, Printed and Sold by Joseph Downing..., 1704. 4to, 195 x 152 mms., pp. [viii] 7 - 63 [64 adverts], engraved frontispiece, recent full calf, gilt spine, A loosely inserted typed note kindicateds that the frontispiece and title-page have been, and that many other restorations of the work have been, and that the binding is recent. It is a very clean and good copy. Woodward (1657–1712) was, as John Spurr writes in his Oxford DNB entry, "an effective publicist and prolific author in the cause of moral reformation. On 28 December 1696 he preached one of the earliest surviving sermons before the Society for the Reformation of Manners, and he was to be its first historian. He published An Account of the Rise and Progress of the Religious Societies in the City of London, which survives appended to his collection of sermons An earnest admonition to all, but especially to young persons (1697), as well as in a 'second enlarged edition' of 1698. This was followed by the similarly… Read More

Edinburgh: Printed by Murray & Cochrane, 1790. 8vo (in 4s), pp. viii, 139 [140 blank], uncut, original boards, paper label on spine; front joint worn, spine a little worn, binding soiled. Tertulian (c. 160 - c. 225) appears to have written this in 212 to persuade Scapula that Christians should not be persecuted, as they are not "atheists," nor are they disloyal. Sir David Dalrympe (1726 - 1792) had a wide circle of literary friends, including David Hume, Adam Smith, James Boswell, and James Beattie among others. He met Edmund Burke in 1791, shortly after this work was published and just before his death. Burke said of him, that he was "the pleasantest, the most good humoured, the most unaffected, & the most communicative man of letters I ever conversed with." In this work, his considerable knowledge of the classics and of early Christian writings is very much on display: the text occupies the first 32 pages, and pages 35 - 139 are notes and commentary, including a… Read More

London: Printed by J. James, for R. S. and sold by Charles Rivington..., 1715. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. xxxi [xxxii blank], 267 [268], 55 [56 - 59 text, 60 - 62 adverts, recent quarter calf, morocco label, marbled boards; no portrait. Nelson is best-known for his active membership in the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (founded 1698) and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (1701), and generally for his religious writings. However, this book, published in the year of his death, illustrates the practical application of his Christian beliefs, with schemes for the relief of the poor, for education, for the formation of libraries, for the erection of charity schools, and for other social welfare projects, many of which were subsequently brought into being.
