Merriam, documenting the "cold term" that struck New York City (12 below zero) and parts of New England in January 1859. Dated and signed January 22nd, 1859. Ebenezer E. Miriam, known as "The Sage of Brooklyn Heights", was a special correspondent and associate editor of the New York City Commercial who "began supplying New York newspapers with predictions in 1856. Many years later, astronomer turned Army Signal Service forecaster Cleveland Abbe concluded that Merriam made his predictions using newspaper weather reports [telegraphic]." Merriam's work eventually led to the formation of a government weather bureau. References: 1. Erik D. Craft: An Economic History of Weather Forecasting (EH.net) 2. Weightman, R. May 31, 1839. R.B. Holliday, a lawyer and cashier at the Farmer's Bank in Winchester writes to Lieutenant Edwin Wright Morgan (1814-1869) shortly after Morgan's return to Pennsylvania from the Seminole War. Although Holliday seems more interested in ladies than in politics, he is undoubtedly invested in national and local politics, and begins his letter: "The long agony is over and I fear the Old Dominion has gone for the little Magician, if so we in the opposition must bear it with philosophy and submit, which is the part of the true Republican. The contest has been throughout the state one of the warmest within my recollection and has been looked upon in every part of the Union with the most intense interest. In our Congressional District the Locofoco candidate received a majority of two out of four thousand…

King, Baltimore customs official, to President Ulysses S. Grant recommending Edward Bradford for the U.S. District Court for Delaware: "Mr. B's labor in the cause of education, and his untiring advocacy of the Constitutional Amendments, as well as his earnest support of your Excellency, are so well known that they need not be mentioned here." Dated and signed December 5, 1871, just a short week before Grant did in fact nominate Bradford. Adam Eckfeldt King (1837-1910) served with five different Union Generals, including Winfield Scott Hancock. [Boston], 1854. Very good, torn along edges and centerfold, faint soiling, minor ink bleed through.. [2 pp]. 3.5 x 6 inches. Edward Everett (1794-1865) was a member of the US House of Representatives (1825-1835); the Governor of Massachusetts (1836-1840); the US Minister to the United Kingdom (1841-1845); the US Secretary of State (1852-1853); and a US Senator (1853-1854). Following his formal political career, Everett spent his remaining years as a traveling orator, and contributing to the New York Ledger, regularly donating proceeds from both of these endeavors. This letter, dated November 22nd, 1854, is to D.N. [Daniel Noyes] Haskell, editor of the Boston Transcript. In full: "I observe in the Transcript this afternoon that you propose to find room tomorrow for my letter to the Historical Society of New York. You would oblige me if you would follow the Daily Adv. of this morning - it was given with so many misprints in some of the New York papers as to the scarcely intelligible."

1836. Very good, edges chipped where seal broken, contents clear, but for slight ink bleed through.. [1 pp.] with integral address on verso. 8 x 10 inches. Dated October 25, without a notation of year but most likely 1836. Benjamin Franklin Butler declined to attend a political meeting as there is "reason to doubt, whether it would be proper or expedient, on the very eve of such an election, as you are to have, for a number of the administration to take such a part, as I should probably be obliged to take, if I attended." New York was having an election for governor in less than two weeks. Butler (1795-1858) was at that time the U.S. Attorney General under Andrew Jackson. He was a prominent lawyer from New York and an ally of Martin Van Buren and a founder of New York University. Prosper Montgomery Wetmore (1798-1876) was a writer and politician with some ethical shortcomings, one of the Regents of the University of the State of New York, and one of the founders of the American Art Union.

Dated and signed August 12th, 1829. by [Commodore] Samuel Tucker who writes to Samuel Thatcher, following a visit from Thatcher's sons, George and Benjamin, who had expressed interest in writing a biography on Tucker's life. Tucker tells Thatcher, "I must say I am heartily sorry, I gave them any encouragement but the moment must be alleged to my imbecility, as I had heretofore declared ever having any such manuscript, go to the press, for such a thing if ever it was to be done, Doctor Moses Shaw has a great claim on me for it..." Tucker had, at some point, submitted a series of papers to Doctor Shaw, of Wiscasset, Maine,; however they had been destroyed in a fire before anything was published. Windsbach, Germany, 1797. Very good, folded, faint soiling, seal intact with opening repaired.. [1 pp.] bifolium. with integral address. 7.5 x 9 inches. Rare signed letter by German philosopher & influential literary figure Friedrich Jacobi (1743-1819) who was known for his critical views of the more liberal philosophies of the day, including Enlightenment and Transcendental Idealism, as well as of the Sturm and Drang literary movement He "was an outspoken critic, first of the rationalism of German late Enlightenment philosophy, then of Kant's Transcendental Idealism, especially in the form that the early Fichte gave to it, and finally of the Romantic Idealism of the late Schelling. In all cases, his opposition to the philosophers was based on his belief that their passion for explanation unwittingly led them to confuse conditions of conceptualization with conditions of existence, thereby denying all room for individual freedom or for a personal God....But perhaps the most influential of Jacobi's…
