His mentor, literary plantation owner Joseph Addison Turner, who published the newspaper The Countryman from his Turnwold Plantation near Eatonton, Georgia, managed to get Harris a deferment from service in the Confederate army, something of an historical question mark/sore point in Harris life. This volume is a nice period guide to Leicestershire, Lincolnshire (except Holland), Rutland, Corby area of Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

He wrote many of the pieces contained in this translation for Swiss newspapers. To get away from angry French cries of traitor, he lived in self-imposed exile in Switzerland where he was awarded the 1915 Nobel Prize for Literature in the same year that this volume, Au-Dessus de la Melee was first published. This is a very nice copy of this interesting work.
