Vashon, WA: Foolsgold Studio, 2007. One of 60 copies, 50 of which are for sale, all signed and numbered by the artist / author, Donald Glaister, each book on pages of painted stiffened fabric on which dimensional constructions are mounted, text printed on Zerkall Frankfurt paper. Page size: 15-1/4 x 9-1/4 inches; 40pp. Bound by Donald Glaister: quarter leather made of Nigerian goatskin with wood veneers and cloth over boards, housed in drop spine box made at Book Lab II. The artist tells us that this new book is inspired by hand-made wooden sailboats, citing their custom craftsmanship, exotic materials and a balance of wild adventure and the need to survive it all. The result, he adds, is a happy combination of these elements resulting in a beautiful contradiction: a craft that is serenely graceful yet brutally sound. His book is an homage to the material and spiritual grace of these boats and to sailing. The text is a two-part poem with studies of the materials used to make sail boats, the spirit of… Read More

2 West 86 St. [New York], 1915. Four Page Holograph letter. 4-7/8 x 6-1/2"; written on cream colored stationary, Catt's address printed in black at the head of the first page, very light age discoloration near the edges, creased once horizontally for mailing, very good. In this letter, addressed to another suffrage leader Mrs. William Todd Helmuth, Catt (1859-1947) expresses her sorrow at Helmuth's illness, and urges her to get well, telling her that the "Feds [won't run] a convention without you." Carrie Chapman Catt succeeded Susan B. Anthony as President of the National American Woman Suffrage Organization in 1900 and served until 1904, when her husband's illness forced her to resign. However, she returned to office in December 1915, and within a few months had forged her "Winning Plan" which did much to secure passage of the Nineteenth Amendment and woman suffrage. A recent profile describes Catt as "a master builder, [something evident in this letter], who reached the apex of her powers just… Read More

New York: October 22, 1900. Letter. 4 1/2 x 7"; 2pp; written on cream colored personal stationary, folded vertically to form two pages, one crease horizontally for mailing, stamped date at the top of the first page reading "OCT 23 1900," very good. Margaret Sangster (1838-1912) was a magazine editor and author who supplied verse, articles and stories to a number of publications. She edited children's and family pages for Hearth and Home and the Christian Intelligencer and was appointed editor of Harper's Bazaar in 1889. She regarded herself as a "Christian leader of women" and was interested in the welfare of girls. Originally opposed to woman suffrage, she changed her views about 1910 because she saw "the helplessness of woman as a competitor in the labor market when she has no voice in the making of the laws affecting her." In this letter, she discusses arrangements for the January 1901 issue of Cosmopolitan. NAW III, pp. 235. Feminist Guide, p. 946.

Description:
Evanston, Ill, 1890. Autograph Letter Signed, "Frances Willard" to Dr. Ward on letterhead of National Woman's Christian Temperance Union, President Frances E. Willard. Single sheet, 8-7/16" x 5-3/8", folded in thirds to fit envelope, else fine. Frances Willard (1839-1898), feminist and reformer, distinguished herself as an educator in the early part of her life. By the 1870's, however, she had found her life's work: temperance. Bringing a small prayer-dominated group to the national stage and prodding the WCTU into other causes -- like suffrage and labor reform -- she shaped the group into a strong woman's movement. By 1890, Miss Willard had experience of 10 years in American party politics and was influential in making the Prohibitionists a successful political force. In her autobiography, GLIMPSES OF FIFTY YEARS, she mentions writing for The Independent as early as 1870. The Independent was a New York-based weekly journal of considerable importance in 19th-century America, absorbing Harper's Weekly… Read More
