Samuel Augustus Mitchell and his sons were the leading publishers of maps in the United States during most of the nineteenth century. Mitchell had come to Philadelphia around 1830 with the intention of improving the standard of geography textbooks. A New American Atlas, published in 1831, was his first work. Then, in 1845 he acquired the rights to Tanner's New Universal Atlas, and in 1846 he published his first edition of the present work. Mitchell continued to publish the atlas until 1850, when he sold the copyright to Cowperthwaite & Co. of Philadelphia, who continued to publish it until the mid-1850s, when It was purchased by Charles DeSilver.

With folding map engraved by Senex. Simon Ockley (1678-1720), prominent English Arabist, edited this anonymous captivity account of Christians enslaved by Islamic pirates. "Barbary" was a European term with pejorative connotations for Northern Africa.

Bookplate on front pastedown of Major-General Sir Thomas Munro, 1st Baronet (1761-1827), who from 1820 to 1827 was Governor of Madras.

Nine pages typed on four 8-1/2" x 11" leaves of Hotel Brevoort letterhead and Scandinavian-American Line letterhead with Reed's name typed at the top right corner of the first page, and pages numbered at the tops of the following pages. With the original envelope addressed in Reed's hand, postmarked twice and stamped "Opened by Censor." Reed's important unpublished typescript was written while he was traveling on board a Danish liner from the United States to Norway during World War I. It was intended to be published in THE MASSES, but the delay in transit -- the first postmark is dated 3 September 1917, and received in Croton-on-Hudson on 11 August 1919, addressed to Mrs. B[oardman] Robinson -- as well as that magazine's legal battle under the Sedition Act must have precluded its publication. Archibald MacLeish was not only a well-known poet but also served as Librarian of Congress, appointed by Franklin Roosevelt, a position he used to reorganize and promote the institution. In addition to winning three Pulitzer Prizes, MacLeish was commissioned by the NEW YORK TIMES to write a poem to celebrate the Apollo 11 moon landing, which he entitled "Voyage to the Moon" and which appeared on the front page of the 21 July 1969 edition of the paper.

A wonderful compendium of colonial laws right up to the colonies' declaration of independence from England. The United States occupation of Veracruz began with the Battle of Veracruz and lasted for seven months, as a response to the Tampico Affair of 9 April 9 1914. The incident came in the midst of poor diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States and was related to the ongoing Mexican Revolution. The Tampico Affair was set off when 9 American sailors were arrested by the Mexican government for entering off-limit areas, a fuel loading station. Although the sailors were released, the U.S. demanded both an apology and a 21-gun salute. The apology was provided, but not the salute, prompting Wilson to order the occupation of the port of Veracruz.
