Yamagata was born in Japan in 1948 and immigrated to Los Angeles in 1978. He befriended Allen Ginsberg and other Beat poets, and has used much of his earnings from his artwork to fund charitable causes and provide disaster relief. He supported Gregory Corso financially from 1992 until Corso's death in 2001.

Cover is irregularly sun-faded, innermost leaves missed being stapled and are loose, some edgewear and corner-creasing, a good copy.

The author headed the infectious disease sections of multiple municipal hospitals in Tokyo, including Komagome Hospital, the first to have a dedicated AIDS center. The book's contents cover basic topics such as "What is AIDS," AIDS transmission routes, AIDS and STD, and the AIDS clinic, but also a number of more social questions, including chapters on "the rapid proliferation of heterosexual transmission," "the threat to young women," and "the destruction of the family has begun." A final chapter is written in Q&A format.

Copiously illustrated with numerous color drawings and photographs. He narrates his experiences working in Jamaica, the difficulties and dangers this presents, as well as his visits to various sites including Bob Marley's birthplace.
