Description:
[New York]: Lith. Stahl & Jaeger. 136-138 Mulberry St., N.Y., 1885. (the Huntington Library notes the two were partners from 1883 until 1908, but a business directory lists the name and street for 1911-12). The Tribune and Farmer advertised here is difficult to identify; OCLC records include similar titles in a sequence: New-York Tribune Farmer (1901-1912), Tribune Farmer (1913), The Rural New-Yorker (1878-1964, absorbed the Tribune Farmer in 1914). The typography suggests the 1880s or 1890s, perhaps later. Apparently the broadside is unrecorded on OCLC. An attractive advertisement, appropriate for exhibition. Folded, with several small tears at folds, verso of one with archival repair not affecting image or text. (7158).

Description:
New York, 1850. Lithograph print of Madison Cottage, 31 x 49 cm., with wide margins. Depicts the cottage with its sign above a front entryway and an American flag flying from the roof, gentlemen arriving from a horse-drawn coach, another full of passengers just pulling up. "Corporal" Thompson took over an old farmhouse at what is now 5th Avenue and 23rd Street in 1839 and renamed it "Madison Cottage" after the former president; the house was the last stop for people traveling north out of the city or the first stop for those arriving from the north. It was razed in 1853. OCLC lists a single copy at Columbia Univ. with width of only 41 cm. Slightly foxed on edges, left lower corner crinkled with a few tears.

Plat map of 435 lots. 43.5 x 25.5 cm. Old fold lines, some toning to paper. Text advertisement for Brown & MacConnell Sales Managers, Fair Harbor Development Co., Inc. 64 Smith Ave., Telephone 128-M, Bay Shore, N.Y., printed below the border of the map. "Fair Harbor began as a real estate enterprise between George Weeks and Selah Clock (also the founder of Lonleyville) in 1923 with the concept of making beach houses available to the 'working man' and indeed they attracted a strong clientele from south shore Long Island hamlets like Bay Shore and Islip. However with the Great Depression on the horizon the business concept became strained. Then the Hurricane of 1938 roared on over Fire Island leaving only eight houses standing in Fair Harbor and enterprise went bankrupt. The community rebounded however after World War II, attracting New York's City's metropolitan" [see: the brief history on the Fire Island website]. The estimated number of houses in the area now seem to match the original lots. No… Read More
