Description:
Ryder Street, St. James, 9 September 1844. 2 pp. 8 x 5 inches, in good condition. William Yarrell (1784-1856), bookseller and naturalist, best known as the author of The History of British Fishes (2 vols., 1836) and The History of British Birds (2 vols., 1843). The latter went into several editions and was the standard reference work for a generation of British ornithologists. He was also the first person to describe the Bewick's Swan in 1830, distinguishing it from the larger Whooper Swan.

Hampton Court, 25 February 1809. 4 pp. 9 x 7 inches, dusty, with other blemishes, but complete, tears at centre fold neatly repaired. Sir George Yonge (1731-1812) was secretary for war in from 1782 to 1794. In February 1799 he was appointed Governor of the Cape of Good Hope.

c.1928. In French (with separate translation) on card, folio, in fine condition. Colette Yver, née Antoinette de Bergevin (1874-1953), French Roman Catholic and feminist writer. This presentation statement was prepared for publication in the famous anthology Pax Mundi. Livre D'or De La Paix (Geneva, 1932), which contained numerous autograph facsimile statements about the prospects for World Peace. It was prepared by the World League for Peace with the approval of the League of Nations. “The religion of peace ia so beautiful that it can be practised without having faith. Hope alone suffices.” [translation]
