The Vice-Commodore Rowland Gibson Hazard's copy, with his bookplate. Hazard (1801-1888) served three terms in the R.I. House of Representatives. Not in OCLC.

Tokyo: Tamagawa University Press, 1977. 8vo, pp. 168, [4]; text in Japanese; text illustrations; printed paper wrappers; small stain and bumps to corners, text clean, very good in fine dust jacket. An overview of the Naxi writing system, or Dongba, an independently developed pictograph system and the only such system still in active use.

Tokyo: Gyokugandou, 1800. 2 volumes, 39 and 43 leaves, 5 preliminary material and the rest containing conjugation charts for around 700 terms. Bound in the Japanese manner in blue paper covers and paper labels; light wear to covers, string binding renewed, very good. A Japanese grammar. The author's preface is dated Tenpou 12 (1840), though given the nature of woodblock printing and the lack of a proper colophon it is difficult to say if this is the date of printing for this particular copy. Ci.nii.ac.jp lists two editions in 1848 and 1852. An increase in contributors listed in the back of vol. 2 from other known copies suggests our copy was likely printed around the later date.

An instruction book for English spelling laid out in 10 courses: the alphabet, syllables and words of two [-three, -four, -five] letters, diphthongs, vowels, etc. A Critical Bibliography of Materials for English Studies in Japan. Tokyo: Chugai-do, 1867. First edition, 2 volumes, pp. [56]; [68]; a number of woodcut illustrations of photographic equipment and techniques for development; original blue wrappers, title labels, printed paper labels on upper covers; good and sound, or better. Yanagawa was a student of Rangaku, or Dutch studies. He headed an early attempt at establishing a westernized educational department, which dissolved when the Shogunate fell to the Meiji restoration, and wrote a number of texts on western technology and culture.The text of this book is derived from the work of Rene Dagron, the French photographer and inventor. Not found in OCLC.

Facsimile after the 1784 edition, two volumes in 13 juan plus 1 addendum; text in Chinese; stab stitched drab paper wrappers; cover labels partially perished, a couple leaves split at fore-edge, manuscript annotations on upper covers, string snapped but binding holding soundly, good. The Fangyan, compiled by Yang Xiong in the Han Dynasty around the first century BCE, was "the first dialect dictionary in the history of Chinese lexicography and is thought to be the first of its kind in the history of world lexicography." (Yong and Peng, Chinese lexicography). It served as an important source for the reconstruction of the Chinese topolects spoken at the time. This edition is after the annotated edition by the scholar Guo Pu, who was the first to annotate the Fangyan in the 4th century CE.

The Fangyan, compiled by Yang Xiong in the Han Dynasty around the first century BCE, was "the first dialect dictionary in the history of Chinese lexicography and is thought to be the first of its kind in the history of world lexicography." (Yong and Peng, Chinese lexicography). It served as an important source for the reconstruction of the Chinese topolects spoken at the time. This edition is after the annotated edition by the scholar Guo Pu, who was the first to annotate the Fangyan in the 4th century CE. It has further commentary by Ding Weifen, a founding father of the Koumintang. This is monograph 5 in the Gu Ya Tang series.

Stab stitched book, 13 juan plus appendix; text in Chinese; printed paper wrappers; owner's seal on title page and a couple internal pages, corner bumped, near fine. The Fangyan, compiled by Yang Xiong in the Han Dynasty around the first century BCE, was "the first dialect dictionary in the history of Chinese lexicography and is thought to be the first of its kind in the history of world lexicography." (Yong and Peng, Chinese lexicography). The Quing scholar Dai Zhen revisited the text, and in 1776 was able to, with the use of the great manuscript encyclopedia the Yongle Dadian, produce an edition that corrected errors that had been introduced to the text over the centuries.

Moscow: Nauka, 1970. 4to, 2 vols.; text in Russian; folding chart, facsimiles of coins in 185 composite plates; full brown cloth, pictorial paper wrappers; vol. 2 boards bowed; wrappers rubbed and a little soiled with a couple shallow chips, very good. A third volume was published later, in 1998.

[Shanghai, 1910. Stab stitched book, 3 juan in one volume; plain paper wrappers; upper wrappers with a few chips, sewing snapped, dampstaining throughout, good. An Lushan (703-757) was a legendary general who instigated a rebellion, established the Yan dynasty, but soon after was murdered after falling ill. Some sources estimate that this rebellion was the deadliest in human history, though the population loss could possibly be attributed to bureaucratic breakdowns in census taking.
