London: Macmillan and Co., 1887 Cloth. Good-/No Jacket 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Appears to be first edition, with date on title page 1887 and author's Preface dated December 1, 1886. Tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Queen Victoria. Bookplate affixed to inside front cover indicates that this volume was donated to the library by Henry B. Brown, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States 1890-1906. Other library marks include small embossed seal to reverse of frontispiece and through tissue guard and title page; age-browned "date due" slip and pocket strip to rear endpapers; old spine label. Cover corners moderately rubbed; cover moderately discolored; spine darkened and somewhat brittle, with several splits at edges and with top 1/4" missing. Some careful glue reinforcement has been applied. Binding somwhat fragile, but intact. Interior clean.

Rebound cover cloth heavily scuffed and rubbed, especially at corners. Spine reinforced with clear tape. Library marks: bookplate to inside cover; inkstamps to rear endpapers, Preface page, lower marging of pp. 29 and 225; "date due" slip remnant to rear endpaper; pocket strip inside rear cover; spine label. Tape stain and closed tear to upper corner front endpaper. In spite of age and library markings, text is clean and only very lightly worn; binding tight.

With black-and-white illustrations. Text prepared under advices of Ernest Cummings Marriner , L.H.D. Colby College historian, who wrote the Foreword. READING COPY ONLY with all information present but with library marks (inkstamps etc.) and significant defects as follows: covers covered with clear contact paper; vinyl tape to spine; clear tape (browned) used to attach inside front cover to front endpaper. Vinyl tape attaching pp.6-7; spine pulling away from text block in spite of repairs. Pages 175-206 in one piece, detached from binding. Pages 207-251 are good copies of original pages, but loose (banded together) and not bound into book. Light soil and wear to front endpaper and title page, but remainder of intact text block and copied pages are clean and unworn.
