Description:
China: no publisher,, [c.1980]. An early album by "Guren" (Person of the Valley), the alias of the contemporary artist Xiao Huirong, themed after two poems by the famed Tang dynasty literatus Li Bai: "Setting Off Early from Baidi City" and "Admiring a Waterfall on Mount Lu". Today, Xiao is a leading flower painter, and his works have sold for up to half a million US dollars at auction. Li Bai (702-762, also known as Li Po) was born into a wealthy family in the golden years of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Rejecting the traditional literati career path - spending years studying for the imperial examination - he spent his time travelling, before eventually gaining an official position through the recommendation of an acquaintance. Later dismissed for an unknown indiscretion, he became a Daoist and wandering recluse, devoting his time to more travelling, meeting people, drinking copiously - his love of wine was legendary - and writing poetry. Renowned in his lifetime, by the time he died Li was known as… Read More

Description:
China: , [c.1980]. An exquisite early album of seals, paintings and calligraphy by "Guren" (Person of the Valley), the alias of the contemporary artist Xiao Huirong. Today, Xiao is a leading flower painter, and his works have sold for up to half a million US dollars at auction. The artworks in this album draw inspiration from the poem "A Visit to Qiantang Lake in the Spring" by the celebrated Tang dynasty lyricist Bai Juyi (772-846). The poem is Bai's ode to the beauty of Qiantang in full flower, with orioles and swallows completing the picturesque scene. Xiao, also known as Sui Fai Wing, was born in 1946 in Guangdong Province. In 1981, he moved to Hong Kong and cultivated a reputation as a specialist painter of flowers, landscapes, and figures. His art has been featured in the National Art Exhibition of the People's Republic of China seven consecutive times, and he has held over 50 solo exhibitions in China and abroad in locations such as the United Nations headquarters. Large octavo,… Read More

Description:
Shanghai: Shanghai renmin chubanshe,, 1956. Second edition, seventh printing overall, of this uncommon and striking example of modern political cartooning, exposing the evils and contradictions of capitalism and its apotheosis, 1950s America. No copies of this edition or the first (1954) are now recorded institutionally, consistent with the relative scarcity of many Chinese comics from the 1950s. After a number of images showing the contribution of slavery, overseas colonization, and industrialization to capitalism's development, this cartoon presents capitalism's modern face: oppressive managers, a dependence on police violence for maintaining order, and "fat cat" business owners hoarding wealth while workers starve. A number of pointed attacks on contemporary America include references to the military-industrial complex, widespread racism, Truman's involvement in the KKK, and the neo-colonialism of the Marshall Plan. Britain and America are pictured at loggerheads over the oil reserves of the… Read More
