Description:
London: T. Bensley, 1795. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Scarce. This edition is printed in Greek and Latin. Bion ( onos) was an ancient Greek bucolic poet from Smyrna, probably active at the end of the second or beginning of the first century BC. He is named in the Suda as one of three canonical bucolic poets alongside Theocritus and Moschus. One long poem about Adonis and seventeen shorter fragments of his poetry survive. Moschus (Moschou) was an ancient Greek bucolic poet and student of the Alexandrian grammarian Aristarchus of Samothrace. He was born at Syracuse and flourished about 150 BC. Aside from his poetry, he was known for his grammatical work, nothing of which survives. Theocritus (early third century BCE), born in Syracuse and also active on Cos and at Alexandria, was the inventor of the bucolic genre. Like his contemporary Callimachus, Theocritus was a learned poet who followed the aesthetic, developed a generation earlier by Philitas of Cos (LCL 508), of refashioning traditional…

London: Constable & Company, Ltd, 1925. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. With laid-in two page letter and postcard from Walker to Cornelis Willem de Kiewiet, and with de Kiewiet's ownership signature on the free front endpaper. Eric Anderson Walker (September 1886 - February 1976) was King George V Professor of History at the University of Cape Town and Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge. He was a pioneer in writing the history of South Africa and later an important historian of the British Empire, though by the end of his life his work was seen as dated and Eurocentric. Cornelis Willem de Kiewiet (May1902 - February 1986) was a 20th-century historian most notable for having served as president of Cornell University and the University of Rochester. De Kiewiet was born in the Netherlands, but grew up in South Africa, where his father went as a diamond and gold-seeker and later worked as an employee of the Transvaal Republic's Railway.…

Toronto: Firefly Books, 2023. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Quarto. Signed in brown ink to title page with small illustration and an inscription in mirror image by George. A wonderful tribute to the art of George Walker. "Ink and paper are my muses. Using hand press printing and printers' ink to create original prints has absorbed me for at least the last 47 years. I love teh qualities of all papers, especially the luxury of fine rag papers and washi papers. Their tactile and soft surfaces beg to receive ink adn I am always too happy to oblige them," George Walker (rear cover). Bound in green cloth boards with white title to spine and front board. Black and white illustration of a tree pasted down to front cover. Includes an introduction, a section with full page black and white reproductions of George's prints, a section on his books, broadsides, and etchings with full color photographic illustrations, an afterword, comments by the artist, and a bibliography.
