Description:
[Chok Anarkli], [Lahore, Pakistan], 1957. Edition Unstated. Softcover (Perfect Bound). Very Good Condition. Illustrator: Lynd Ward. Book For the Lynd Ward completist, as was the previous owner -- Dan Burne Jones who sought to collect all editions of books written and illustrated by Ward. This is his copy of the Pakistani printing of Ward's 1953 Caldecott Metal award-winning book, published through Franklin Publications in New York. WorldCat shows only two holdings: The Library of Congress and the New York Public Library. According to the Library of Congress' description of its Franklin Book Program Collection, "Franklin assisted developing countries in the creation, production, distribution, and use of books and other educational materials. Its efforts were based on the premise that through wider and improved education, underdeveloped nations could better utilize their human resources to help eliminate hunger, poverty, overpopulation, and economic paralysis." As an indication of the effort to… Read More

Hardcover in full polished calf with a contemporary red leather panel on the spine with the title "Watts on The Mind." Corners turned in. Description:
Printed for J. Brackstone and T. Longman, London, 1743. Second Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition. Book An early printing of Watt's textbook, which went through multiple printings. Of particular interest is the six page "Catalogue of the Writings of the Revd Dr. Isaac Watts ; Printed for and sold by James Brackstone, at the Globe in Cornhill." Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 362 pages. Item Type: Book. The major defect is that the title page is missing. However, the half-title and preface match Brackstone's second edition, published in 1743. Other than that loss, the text block is tight. Leather-bound in polished calf with gilt lines on front and back covers and defining the raised bands on the spine. The leather is heavily worn. Spine title label is missing. Front cover hinge is broken through and held by one cord. Back cover hinge is broken, but cords are holding. Moderately foxed throughout. There are some marks in pencil through the text. In the chapter… Read More

John Perkins, Boston, 1773. 27th Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Fair Condition. Book An attractive part of this book is the quaint poems the original owner has written on the verso of the title page: "Dont Stele this Book | For fear of Shame for | Underneth her lies my | name | Abigail Tucker | Hur Book Bought | May the 21st 1776 | Abigail Tucker -- | Hur Book May god | Give her grase therein | To look and when the | Bells for ^her^ Doth tole -- | ay the god of heaven | Reseive hur Sole --" The imprint reads "Printed for and sold by John Perkins." Not in Evans. Bristol's Supplement #B3526 (cf. Shipton & Mooney #42536) lists a book with the same pagination as "Boston: Printed and sold by William M'Alpine, 1773," but he does not list this variant which appears to have been printed by M'Alpine for Perkins. Size: 6"-7" - Sextodecimo (16mo). 312 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is almost completely detached from the cover and the… Read More

Holbrook and Fessenden, Brattleborough, VT, 1827. Revised Edition. Hardcover (Quarter Leather). Poor Condition. Book Skeel 220. The revised impression, with the latest corrections. The title page lacks a date, but she dates it as 1827? based upon Table LII, Of Numbers, which provides examples of Roman numerals, the last being for 1827 (p. 144). She describes this printing as, "Undated, and different in make-up from other Holbrook and Fessenden editions. ... This edition resembles most closely that of Middletown, 1829." OCLC shows no holdings for this particular printing, though Skeel in 1958 reported seven copies at Yale, Harvard, the Henry Ford Museum, NYPL, Columbia University, Western Reserve Historical Society and Middlebury College. Size: 5"-6" - Vigesimo-quarto (24mo). 168 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight. The first few pages are are folded at the bottom corner. Description:
William Morrow & Company, New York, 1941. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good- Condition. Book Signed by Author. An inscribed copy of a novel by Quaker author Janet Whitney. Based upon the WorldCat listings, it appears this was her first book. It is inscribed "To Caroline Jacob -- | with warm love from her friend | Janet Whitney --." This copy must have been from the first printing, since she has dated it December 1940, though it has a publication date of 1941. Whitney went on to write four more novels and four biographies, usually dealing with Quakers. In this novel she tells the tale of a Quaker girl named Jennifer Carey, born in 1807 to a frail mother and distant father, who sent her off to be cared for by a wet nurse and reared by her her Nurse Biddy. She is pursued by a cad who poisons her father in order to marry her. Jennifer is convicted of the murder of her father and sent to Australia where she tries to clear her name. The book was popular at the time,… Read More

Printed by Bartholomew Green, Boston, 1727. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. Book 2 leaves (title page and address to Sir William Ashhurst) printed in facsimile on laid paper. 64 p., 24 p. Although the two works are paginated separately, the signatures are continuous (Sewall ends with Sig. S and Willard begins with Sig. T). Willard’s pamphlet is followed by an appendix written by Sewall. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). In bringing together his earlier work, Willard’s sermon and an update in his appendix, Sewall marshals the evidence for his position that the Millennium is near and that the discovery and Christianizing of America is a crucial and perhaps final development to that end. Drawing from prophetic passages describing the coming Millennium, Sewall find significance in the discovery of the Americas as the final remaining area to be found. He also sees the New World as a logical place for the New Jerusalem to be established.… Read More

Harcourt Brace, New York, 1920. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. Good+ Condition/No Dust Jacket (as issued). Book First trade printing of what became a standard style book for writers. This was originally prepared by Strunk for use in his classes at Cornell University and, based upon the dates on the copyright page, there were apparently two private printings (1918 and 1919) before this first trade edition. Size: Around 7" or slightly taller - Duodecimo (12mo). 52 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight though toned from age. Six pages have markings in pencil, usually a check mark for a section, but a few instances of examples of sentence construction on two of the pages. Blue paper over boards bound in blue fabric. The title and author are printed in block within a box and there is an HB CO logo on the front cover. Description:
Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good- Condition/Fair. Book This appears to be the First Edition printing of #9 in the Dana Girls series, though it could be a 1941 printing. Even Axe only provides general information on the formats for the books in the series. This has the purple cloth over heavy boards with the silhouette of the girls in a circle on the front cover, which fits Axe's Format I. He calls for the end papers to show the girls reading a letter printed in burgundy; here they are in green. However, he calls for burgundy in Format II (1942-1944), as well, so the green seems to be an alternate color for some bindings. This has a plain frontis, but it is on better paper than the WWII acidic paper of Format II. The dust jacket has the early 50 cent pricing (5050 at the top of the front flap) and lists the series to this title. The the list of Nancy Drew books on the rear flap only goes to "The Clue of the Tapping Heels," which was published… Read More

Description:
Cupples & Leon Company, New York, 1942. Later Printing. Hardcover. Very Good- Condition/Fair. Book The Cupples & Leon printings are cheaper than those of Grosset & Dunlap from the same era and suffer from amateurish drawings and plots and characters that are more set in the WWII era than other series. In spite of that, as Axe notes, "The Penny Parker Books are eagerly collected today, especially because they are the work of Mildred A. Wit, and are more valuable as collectors' items than other series books that are better mysteries."
