This volume documents a Canadian expedition to the Yangzi Gorge region of China in 1992. The expedition was organized to gauge the potential cultural destruction of the daunting and controversial Three Gorges Dam project. That project was completed about 2003 and all generators at the dam are currently online producing power. Bai Di Cheng and other towns along the Yangze Gorge have now been flooded. In this volume Wallace documents the intellectual achievements of 19th century. He also analyses its social 'failures', such as poverty and militarism. This work was simultaneously published in the USA by Dodd, Mead & Co in New York. No ownership marks and few signs of use. A very bright and clean copy. Rarely found in such nice condition.

This volume combines “Natural Selection” first published in 1870 with “Tropical Nature” first published in 1878 into a new edition with corrections first published in 1891. The front facing endpapers display two bookplates -- Richmond College, Surrey (and) Library of the Wesleyan Theological Institution, Richmond, Surrey. This work is based on a Burg Wartenstein symposium held in Austria sponsored by the Wenner-Gren Foundation in the summer of 1962. Eighteen specialists in human evolution, genetics, primate paleontology and behavior, and evolutionary biology participated in this one-week symposium. The papers in this volume resulted from that symposium. Washburn was the driving force behind the selection of the symposium participants. No ownership marks.

Publisher's original dark green ribbed cloth, ornately stamped in blind on the upper and lower covers and on the spine, lettered in gilt on the spine, 12mo (6.75 x 4.5 inches; 170 x 114 mm). This is a scarce early review of the Irish avifauna covering descriptions, habits, migrations, occurrences and economy of 261 species. This volume was first owned by Henry Fisher and was brought by him from Ireland to the U.S.A. Fisher later passed the book to his grandson, Fisher Heckmott Joy, in July 1910; their ownership history is recorded on the half-title page. The final owner was William M. Original printed pictorial stiff wrappers, lg 4to. Willandra contains some of the earliest evidence of Homo sapiens sapiens outside Africa. The evidence of occupation deposits establishes that humans had dispersed as far as Australia by 42,000 years ago. The Lake Mungo early hominin site is part of the Willandra Lakes region.
