Description:
Whitman, Walt. AS A STRONG BIRD ON PINIONS FREE AND OTHER POEMS. Washington, D. C: [S. W. Green for Walt Whitman] 1872. First edition. Original dark green cloth, gilt. Lightly rubbed, and minor foxing on end papers, else a very nice copy. Inscribed by Whitman on the front end paper: "Matthew Collins from his friend the Author." Below the inscription, someone, perhaps Collins, has scrawled "W. W." Very nearly a fine copy. Issued as a supplement a few months after the Washington, D. C. edition of LEAVES OF GRASS, this printing of seven poems is less often seen than his other editions of the 1870s. We have not been able to identify the receipient, but have found one person of this name whose age and locale might connect him with Whitman at this period --a 26 year old unmarried ice-wagon driver in Philadelphia (just across the river from Whitman's home in Camden), the sort of common working man celebrated by Whitman. Description:
[WHITTIER, JOHN GREENLEAF] PHOTOGRAPH MOUNTED UNDER GLASS [n.p., n.d., ca. 1880-1895] 2 x 2 inches. Original albumen portrait of Whittier in old age, mounted under a thin piece of octagonal beveled glass with original faux morocco backing. It was a common practice in the late nineteenth century to mount photos with this kind of backing on glass paperweights, but this example is smaller and much too light for that purpose. It may have been intended to be framed and attached to a badge or ribbon for some kind of event or as a memento mori for use in a memorial service (Whittier died in 1892). A charming relic and the only one of its…

Whittier writes to his old friend and fellow abolitionist about a visit they were trying to arrange: "Danvers 5th mo. 17, Dear Garrison, I shall be at Amsbury for a few days, probably until the last of next week. I will notify of my return. Very cordially thy fr[ien]d, John G. Whittier." On the address panel Whittier has written "William Lloyd Garrison, Highland, Boston." Description:
Whittier, John Greenleaf. SNOW-BOUND, A WINTER IDYL. Boston: Ticknor & Fields, 1866. First edition, first issue with page 52 numbered. Original green cloth, gilt, with a card autographed by Whittier in his usual purple ink tipped in. Faint dampmark along top edge of front cover, else a lovely copy with few signs of rubbing, the text tight and clean. The genuine first issue of this book is so rare that it attracted forgers as early as the 1920s; the second issue is fairly common. The later editions (marked with "thousand" statements) are frequently misrepresented as first editions. This nostalgic…
