Wait was convicted of high treason and condemned to death, but his sentence was later commuted to permanent exile to Van Diemen's Land. He managed to escape to the United States before news reached him that he had received a pardon in 1842.

His stories were included with those by Izaak Walton, Henry David Thoreau and Ernest Hemingway in collections about fishing.
