Description:
México: Imprenta del Gobierno, en Palacio, 1873.. 94pp. Original printed blue wrappers. Wrappers a bit worn, small tear to lower left corner of front wrapper and titlepage, several small holes in rear wrapper. Lightly tanned. Overall very good. The rare Spanish translation of Wadsworth's report responding to the claims of 366 Mexican citizens against the American government relating to trans-border depredations by "Apaches, Comanches, and other Indians" in the territory of the Gadsden Purchase. Together, the Mexican citizens sued the United States for a total of over thirty million dollars for damages to self and property incurred between 1848 and 1853. Wadsworth flatly rejects their claims on a number of grounds. Fundamentally, he states that "1st. It does not appear that the claimants were injured or harmed 'on authority of the United States.' 2nd. The claims of the claimants, which the Mexican government currently asserts, were settled by the two governments by virtue of the treaty which they… Read More

Description:
[Akron, Oh.: The Werner Company, 1899].. 103pp. plus twenty-five chromolithographs. Oblong folio. Original pictorial cloth. Corners bumped, cloth edgeworn and spotted, hinges weak. Internally clean and fresh. Wagner's lavish work contains numerous large chromolithographs depicting the history of the army of the United States from the American Revolution to the Spanish-American War, with depictions of all. It also serves as a useful guide for identifying military dress throughout the first hundred years of the U.S. Army. The Werner Company of Akron, Ohio was a leading innovator in new printing technology at the end of the century. According to McGrath, the plates were created by combining the primary colors and sienna in careful mixtures, allowing far fewer color stones than would have traditionally been used. "Not only are the plates technically interesting, but three are from drawings by Henry Alexander Ogden" - McGrath. The result of this trichromatic chromolithographic technique, while somewhat… Read More

Buffalo: A.W. Wilgus, 1843.. 356pp. plus frontispiece and folding map. 12mo. Contemporary half calf and ribbed cloth, expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. A good copy. An interesting and vivid account of the author's imprisonment on Van Dieman's Island as a result of charges brought against him during the insurrection in Upper Canada. Written in the form of letters, this is a minutely detailed description of life in the prison colony, the events leading to Wait's incarceration, and his efforts to lobby for his release. Also included are personal letters of appeal from Wait's wife on behalf of her husband, written to the Earl of Durham and others. A crude little map of Tasmania, printed in negative, must be the first chart of that island executed in Buffalo. HOWES W16. SABIN 100969. TPL 2622. LANDE 2283. FERGUSON 3762. Description:
Chicago: Daily Democrat Steam Press Print, 1856.. 32pp. Modern boards, printed paper label. Titlepage reinserted, some minor dampstaining in foremargin of some leaves. Good. A rare Chicago ante-fire imprint. This work is critical of Blackwell's A PRACTICAL TREATISE ON THE POWER TO SELL LAND FOR THE NON-PAYMENT OF TAXES ASSESSED THEREON (1855): "...it can never be received as authority, in this state at least, until it shall have been entirely remodeled; and until the author shall have changed his present attitude of hostility to the Supreme Court of Illinois." It is usually ascribed to Charles B. Waite, a Chicago lawyer of the time, and this copy bears his name, written in a contemporary hand, on the titlepage. Not listed in OCLC, in CHICAGO ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS, or in Cohen. The only located copy resides in the Library of Congress, according to a note on the front endsheet in the hand of Chicago bookseller Wright Howes. BYRD 2528.
