The interior of the book is exceptionally clean and bright although the front cloth covers show some fading. A likely association copy; the title page has the name "Stephen Longstreet/ix (?) '48," possible association copy belonging to artist and author Stephen Longstreet (1907-2002). The dustjacket is complete with the original price ($2.50). The ends of the spine are reinforced with brown tape (not visible from the front) which may repair a small cut on the bottom end but not for sure since the dustjacket shows no other wear. There is some darkening, especially on the creases and spine. But overall a solid First Edition with a possible association name.

This is the second state (with multiple copyright dates) of the First Edition (so stated) of a purported 8,000 total First Edition copies published. The book is Near Fine in condition with rubbing on the cover corners and edges and natural toning to the pages; otherwise it is very clean and solid. The VG+ dustjacket, in a protective plastic cover, is complete and intact with some tears on the edges, some rubbing and soiling; it is clipped at the corners. This book is a collection of Welty's marvelous short stories which further established her reputation as one of the twentieth century's best loved writers.
