Original full vellum, gilt to spines and upper covers, t.e.g. Spine of Rhinegold slightly rubbed and faded, Siegfried lacks tie, some light spotting to covers, some off setting from brown paper to next text leaf, but generally quite bright and clean. Each illustration with titled tissue guard. Rhinegold is number two hundred and fifty-one of eleven hundred copies, Siegfried is number five hundred and eighty-eight, both signed by Rackham to limitation leaf. [44]p (including blanks), original gilt decorated vellum designed by Charles Ricketts, with his monogram to bottom left hand corner of upper cover and the monogram of the binders (Leighton, Son and Hodge) to the bottom left hand corner of the lower cover. Corners slightly bumped and rubbed, vellum generally quite bright and clean. Internally some light browning to page edges, some light foxing to several pages (as often), but generally fairly clean. Small booksellers label and previous owners book plate to front paste down. Printed in three colours throughout. 'The Coffin Expedition' shows French sailors wearing bonnet rouges sailing in cannon laden coffins with skulls for mastheads ('Boney's crest, a skull without brains'), with one 'boat' sinking and the others being closed in on by the British navy in the background, with one French sailor exclaiming 'Oh de Corsican Bougre, was make dese Gun Boats on purpose for our Funeral'. London: James Wyld, 1857. iv, 114pp. Wyld's map of India, coloured, dissected and mounted on linen, with index, bound as a book, marbled endpapers. Small map of the world as a frontispiece and a smaller map of the India bound after the advertisement leaves. The map of India itself measures 695mm x 990mm. Extremities rubbed, spine worn. Endpapers and ffeps with newspaper cuttings about India pasted down. Map very lightly browned, a couple of minor abrasions and creases, but generally in good order. First issued in 1841, this is dated 1857, documenting British East India Company control over India, and showing distances between cities, as well as the growth of the railway.
