In a superb Arthur Hawkins, Jr. dust jacket showing light wear and slight chips. The Arthur Hawkins dust jacket design is superb, showing towering, impersonal skyscrapers dwarfing two yellow cabs. Single sheet, 4to (8.25" x 10.5"). Printed recto only. Two mellowed horizontal folds, and two closed tears on right margin, one measuring 1" and the other measuring 0.5", else Near Fine. A letter of approximately 900-words from Garfielde to Hon. J. W. Nesmith (then-US Senator from Oregon) attempting to influence Nesmith toward securing an appointment for General Winlock Miller as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Washington Territory. A notable Washington Territory imprint, the printing was transcribed to print from a "true copy, in the possession of a Republican in Olympia, W. T." and was published November 6, 1869 by the Republican party in an attempt to exploit the political differences of Garfielde and Arthur Denny, and their parties. A fine example of bare-knuckle frontier politics, and a rare example of territorial printing. An OCLC search reveals four institutional holdings. Not in SMITH or SOLIDAY.
