THIS IS A big BOOK, Med BROWN CLOTH COVERS WITH GOLD LETTERING, A THIN LINE OF FADE AT THE VERY EDGES OF THE COVERS, BRUISED SPINE ENDS, VERY LIGHT SHELF WEAR BOTTOM EDGE, SMUDGES ON THE BOTTOM PAGE ENDS FROM SLIDING THIS BIG BOOK IN AND OUT ON THE SHELF, NO MARKINGS, UNREAD TIGHTNESS, TOP 1/4 SPINE A LITTLE FLATTEN, ONE SMALL STAIN DROP TOP EDGE, ANOTHER ON THE TOP EDGE REAR COVER. DJ: HAS MINOR CHIPPING SHELFWEAR, SEVERAL SMALL TEARS, I DO NOT SEE A PRICE AND NO BLINDSTAMP ON REAR. Like most books this big, it has semi depressions in the spine area, as seen in the photos. There is no mention of Book Club.

No mention of other printings, I assume a 1st. Only Copy Listed With A DustJacket but it has chipping and rubbing, and it is fragile, Book: bumped top front corner, pages beginning to age tone. spine ends bruised. I am not showing the flaps of the DJ, but they have them, price clipped.

Illustrated boards and matching dj, signed by Author(signature only) page ascross from Main title page, black fountain pen. minor shelfwear is only defect I see, other than a little paper loss inside rear cover bottom near spine, maybe a store label removed. VG or Better. No other marks, etc.

I have natural as they are copies also. When I started collecting Pulitzer Prize Winners this was it by name for 1922. As the years go by it has changed to a book that never was. This book is famous also for having 1st poems in book form by many Poets who chose what to put in this book. This only happened a few years and stopped. I am so glad to have found this book.

Black cloth spine with Gold Lettering(almost all gone) with red paper cover boards, edges are worn, bumped, but. Inside the covers, front to back has no markings, is very clean, and has unread tightness and square. Over the years the winner for 1923 for poetry has changed its status. The rules state: For the best volume of verse published during the year by an American author, then it gives 3 different titles of 3 different books and the last one is 8 Sonnets in American Poetry 1922. A Miscellany(Harper as the publisher which is not correct its Harcourt, Brace, and Company) so you have to have this one and 2 others to have your bases covered. This is the collectible copy, not a reprint. I did place some corner protectors to stop any more damage to the corners(they are easy to remove and replace with black ones) I only had bronze ones and it does look nicer.

Former Library but only checked out a few times, not perfect but VG or better with the DJs in mylar and protected. Tape is on the outside covers. Make a mess if not taken time to remove.

A Miscellany, by Edna St. Vincent Millay.. Pulitzer Prize Winner for Edna St. Vincent Millay 1923 for this BOOK.. I have 2 of this title in little better listed as well. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket.

Black cloth spine with gold lettering and stamped red cloth hardboards with black lettering. Corner protectors with black edges. Covers have some soiling and some light age-toning to the page ends. Over all a nice copy of this Pulitzer Winner for 1923. When Columbia University can spend some time with their archives and put it back where it belongs and not have a student to decide what is what. Harcourt, Brace & Co. is the publisher of the book NOT McMillian because the poems can not appear in American Poetry if published in book form elsewhere. Edna St. Vincent Millay's 8 sonnets appeared in book form here. This book was a labor of love for her since she gather up the poems that were left for her when she decided what she wanted to publish she took them to him. "No Editor"

These books are getting harder to find unless you want a reprint and don't really collect 1st editions.

1st printing after 275 signed copies,this is the 1st trade with publisher's monogram on the copyright page (pg.47 Merle Johnson). But this one is inscribed,1st leaf in author's handwriting "For ____and______from Stephen, with warm affection." This is one of many bought and listed here from an estate,this one just has Stephen.
Slight rubbing to the covers,but still very shiney black cloth with gold lettering and symbol on the front cover,there is wear on the very ends and the fading of the ends spine area has been touched up some.slight lean,very clean book. DJ: is in pieces with half the spine missing,included in case you want to restore it.

I have a collection of signed books by Stephen to these same people it states "To ? and ? with the friendship of Stephen Vincent Benet, New Year's - 1921 - Paris" on the first leaf which has darken with age but very very readable and presentable. The outside covers are sunned and with a small chip on the top of the spine,not interferrring with the title.This book has all the points to be a first edition by Holt.. Inscribed By the Author. First Edition. Hardcover. poor/No Jacket. And price has been reduced by Half, check the photos.

JOHN BROWN'S BODY VG+/DJ: VG- the dj is in 2 pieces but under mylar it is hard to see,it has soiling and about 1 inch missing space top and light chipping. The book is STATED First after the Deluxe Edition except for light bruising to the spine ends and thats it as far as I can see, I believe the book is better than VG+ but I might have missed something. STATED first printing,light fade to spine color,very minor shelfwear,rubbing.very clean,tight,square. Most book people would rate this book as Near Fine because of its age I can not. Check the photos and you decide.

I had a collection of Stephen's material and decided to break down in groups. This group Has a signature with the book: Johnny Pye and the Fool-Killer numbered 524 of 750 copies and it is signed by the Artist Charles Child and Stephen Vincent Benet. Both signatures are bold and dark considering the book is from 1938. Countryman Press, 78 numbered pages. It is very tight and square, but outside color of the cloth is sunned to various degrees. The spine is barely readable looks like it was left in the sun on different days. But the signature is the vaule/worth.Most of his work is in the Two Volume set Farrar & Rhinehart, 1942, The Selected Works of Stephen Vincent Benet, Volume One is Poetry up to 1941. It begins with John Brown's Body in full(I believe) Young Adventure and so on. And finishes with Listen to the People.
