Very good, minimal foxing, early color copperplate from this 1708 (original version published in 1660 by Jansson) Schenk/Valk issue of (Andreas Cellarius') "Harmonia Macrocosmica Seu Atlas Universalis Et Novus." The striking image measures 41 x 51 cm on a sheet 50 x 59 cm. Numerous cherubim surrond the eastern hemispheric view, which is also divided into frigid, termperate, tropical and torrid zones. There are separate armillary and habitat zonal spheres in the lower corners. Ref: Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Cel.3. There are bilateral, faint water-stains in the pink circular band surrounding the map image..

The striking image measures 43 x 52 cm on a sheet 51 x 60 cm. Numerous cherubim surrond the circular view, as does an outer circle of a number of signs of the zodiac. Amsterdam: van Keulen, 1695. Near fine, rare, hand colored (probably later) large sea chart on double-layer paper. The issue date is approximate. Not listed in Norwich (several similar sea charts are referenced), although it is referenced in Koeman's reference (#95). The place-names are Portuguese. A striking map, with an elaborate cartouche of several native figures, and an instructive European. "Genehoa" is just north of Gambia; the mouth of the Gambia River is shown. Paris: Pierre De Hondt (A La Haye), 1737. Large 4to. full leather, covers a bit chipped at upper corners, hinges starting, ornamental 5-banded spine with gilt-lettering. All 36 plates detailing fortifications are present, most in very good or better condition. Plate 26 a bit chipped at outer edge where it extends beyond the margins. A few scattered library stamps, not affecting plates (on laid paper). Contemporary covers, 261pp + 20pp dedication, preface and table of contents. Copies in Bibliotheque Nationale and Library of Congress online catalogues. Very little browning to text with nice margins. Vauban (1633-1707) was one of the great military engineers of all time, and Louis XIV chief military engineer.. Paris, c. 1748. G+ w/some minor soiling, hand colored outlines. Moderately detailed for the time. This map is probably from Atlas Portatif, although the image differs slightly from Norwich's (Maps of Africa, 2nd ed., Map 90) in that the indication of Delahaye as th e engraver is not present on the map offered for sale here. This is a good map, but not the quality of the other, nearly identical, map also currently in my inventory. Paris: Diderot, 1772. B&W as issued, VG+ with a few small marginal tears repaired with archival tape. A very clean image of this map from Diderot's ENCYCLOPEDIE, prepared by Robert de Vaugondy and based on the image by Jeffery's. Admiral de Fonte was as mythological as was the northwest passage. This is a very nice interesting map, 29x36cm (11.5x14 inches). .

A striking map, referenced in Laor's 1988 "Maps of the Holy Land" (other similar examples, but not this specific map, are referenced in Nebenzahl's "Maps of the Holy Land"). Verso text, in Dutch, is intact. N. Visscher wa s the son of CLJ Visscher, each a part of this major Dutch mapmaking dynasty. Maps such as the one offered here were produced specifically for a number of Dutch bibles.
