Description:
Lakeville, CT: Lakeville Journal, 1959. Lathrop, Dorothy. Large bifolio, printed on both sides. The recto shows Van Doren's poem set at the center of a red and tan checkered border, adorned with six of Lathrop's illustrations of wintry mice and squirrels. The verso, printed in red, displays five Christmas messages from local businesses and from the Lakeville Journal itself. Van Doren and Lathrop had both, in their later careers, settled in northern Connecticut, and their collaboration here represents the occasionally overlooked creativity of the area. Some faint toning to edges, trace chipping, folded in fourths, else near fine.

Description:
Cambridge, MA: Pomegranate Press, 1973. Klopp, Karyl. Folio broadside. One of fifty copies. Signed by Karyl Klopp, proprietor of the press. A twenty-five-line poem by Mark Van Doren, beautifully printed on cream-colored paper and featuring an illustration by Karyl Klopp beside the text. Van Doren's long career as a poet and writer included a job teaching at Columbia, where two of his students were Allen Ginsberg and the poet-monk Thomas Merton. He was also the father of Charles Van Doren, who gained fame in the mid-1950s as one of the contestants on the rigged TV game show Twenty-One, upon which the 1994 movie Quiz Show was based. The Pomegranate Press was known for publishing the works of some of the leading Beat poets of the day, including Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, and Robert Bly. This piece, mounted on cardboard, comes in a simple wooden frame that measures 21 1/2 by 15 1/2 inches. Paper backing on frame torn at top, else fine.

Description:
Newark, VT: Janus Press, 2002. Quarto text volume, plus sixteen 32mo. samples. 142pp.; samples variously paginated. One of 200 copies, signed by Claire Van Vliet. A trade copy of Van Vliet and Elizabeth Steiner's how-to manual on creating non-adhesive book structures is accompanied by miniature models of each of the techniques described therein, executed by Audrey Holden. The models serve to make clear in three dimensions what is often difficult to discern in two and, as Ruth Fine notes in The Janus Press—Fifty Years, are elegant and skillfully executed book objects in their own right. The models are divided into four non-adhesive slipcases with the names of the represented techniques printed on each. A letter from Van Vliet is laid in. All components housed together in a drop-back box with the colophon printed on the inside front board. Fine. (Janus checklist pp. 40-43, 58-59).

Description:
(N.p., 1989. Leavitt, Nancy. Small quarto. 10ff. A one-of-a-kind manuscript, completely hand-bound, lettered, painted, and signed by the artist Nancy Leavitt. Leavitt's superlative skill as a calligrapher is clear in this illustration of Suzanne Vega's song of loss and unrequited love, "Calypso." Vega retells the beginning of the Odyssey from the perspective of Ulysses's captor, the nymph Calypso, and the wild flourish of Leavitt's letters captures the raw emotion expressed by Calypso as she lets her long-captive lover go. The pages are speckled and blotched with color, as if by the nymph's tears or the spray of the ocean that surrounds her island home, and which now carries away her sole companion. Pages of rainbow-hued text are interleaved with soft, translucent paper with dried flowers. At the center of the book is a painting of Calypso's island paradise, created with overlapping layers of paper painted with flowers and brushed with green and gold. The book is meant to be read along with Vega's… Read More

Description:
NY: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1932. Vivier, Max. Octavo. 31pp. The twenty-seven pages of text are joined by twenty-seven reproduced drawings by Vivier, who illustrates scenes from President Lincoln's life in his characteristic silhouette style. Both the images and the text evoke Lincoln the legend as much as Lincoln the man. Bound in red cloth over boards, with pictorial paper to upper cover. The original, uncommon dust wrapper bears the same design, which seats a silhouette portrait of Lincoln against a red-white-and-blue striped curtain backdrop. Minor general edgewear to wrapper, including expected toning, and solitary mild bump to upper corner of upper board. Near fine. Laid in are two sheets from Stokes' catalogue of publications for 1932.
