Description:
Belvezy: Editions Anima Mundi 2002, 2002. Limited edition, 19 of 50. 150x120mm. Unpaginated. pp.20. The text is printed in red from the Kleweta's calligraphy. Illustrated with six coloured engravings including one on the title page and line drawings in the text. Bound in red morocco illustrated on the upper cover and lettered in gold to upper and lower cover. Near fine. Printed by Kleweta on his own press, this is an attractive example of his distinctive dream-like style and left-field choice of subject mixing erotic prints with alchemical symbols. Basilius Valentinus was, supposedly, a fifteenth-century alchemist and monk although it seems that no such person ever existed. Instead, he is now thought to have been Johann Thölde, a German salt manufacturer and Kleweta gives us "Valentinus's" recipe's for the production of salt. A curious and beautiful artist's book. Rafal Augustyn Kleweta was born in Lodz, Poland in 1949. He worked for the film director Jerzy Hoffman… Read More

New-York: Printed and Published by C.S. van Winkle.1818. First edition. 12mo in 6s. 163x100mm. pp. xii, 13-229, [55]. Folding "Scale for Calculating Work". The last, unpaginated fifty-five pages are "A Specimen of Printing Types from the Foundry of E.White, No 11 Thames-Street, New-York" and "A Specimen of Printing Types cast at D.& G. Bruce's Foundry, Chamber Street, New-York". Recently bound in mottled tan calf, single fillet gilt border, spine with dark brown morocco label, lettered in gilt, modern endpapers. Some browning and foxing, a small marginal tear to p77 (not affecting the text) and a tiny hole to the title page but overall a very good copy of an important and rare book, the last copy appearing at auction in 1925. The significance of van Winkle's book lies in its being the first printer's manual written by an American printer, for American printers and published in the United States. Whilst he admits his debt to Caleb Stower's Printer's Grammar, van Winkle explains that he was motivated to… Read More

Description:
New York: Visionaire 1997, 1997. Limited edition of 3000. Dark blue vinyl case with a pack of large playing cards inside. All inside a white card box. The images on the cards were each designed by individual art directors including Fabien Baron, Mario Testino (who photographed John Galliano as the King of Diamond while Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin photographed Iman as the Queen. The 3,000 issues of Visionaire 21 were packaged in individual jewellery boxes, each with its own lock and key, and offered a real diamond for one lucky subscriber. Sadly no diamond with this one. And this is missing the key but otherwise, this is is a very nice example of Visionaire's stylish and louche work.

Toulon: Hotel des Arts n.d. [c.2000], 2000. First edition. 8vo (220x170mm). Unpaginated save for the seventeen pages of text, [pp. 136]. Number 259 of an unknown number of first printing copies of this striking and strikingly designed collection of beach photographs. The cover is card although with a faux-satin finish, decorated with a polka dot lenticular design, lettered in black. Crease to upper cover but otherwise very good. Printed on a variety of paper types from high quality gloss to soft kitchen-paper. The text, in French, is an essay by the photographer Sophie Baiss-Fabiani and, separately, an interview with her. "Vitali's images, taken along the coastal Var region of the French Riviera (and a few in Italy), feature beachgoers crowding onto the narrow strips of land sandwiched between the Mediterranean Sea and the dense urban environment further inland. Positioned atop a tall scaffold located a few meters into the water, Vitali's large-format camera gives viewers something… Read More

Description:
London [actually New York]: Max Harzof 1888 [actually c1924], 1924. Pirated edition. pp 87. 245 by 182mm. Rust marks in inner margin throughout, otherwise a clean and fresh copy. Grey/green paper boards and cloth spine, lightly rubbed, trace of label removed from upper board. Good According to Thomas Seccombe in his DNB article, only twelve copies were published of this selection of passages from English literary classics intended to show that even the greatest works have "dirty bits". In fact, nineteen have been located. In 1924, a facsimile was published by Max Harzof in New York. It is thought that there are fewer copies of this than of the original. The publisher Henry Vizetelly began issuing English translations of Zola's novels and by 1888 had published thirteen titles. That of "The Soil" ("La Terre") proved too much for the authorities and in November 1888 he was brought to trial for "publishing an obscene libel". At the beginning of the trial… Read More

London: Chapman and Hall 1915, 1915. First edition. Presentation copy. 8vo. 190x125mm. pp. [2], 142. Original green cloth lettered in black to the upper cover and spine in a typeface designed by Voysey. Inscribed by Voysey on the front free endpaper: "Presented to the Arts Club with fear and trembling by the author April 13th 1915". The front pastedown has the Arts Club's bookplate, designed by Voysey.Slight wear to corners and foot and head of spine and some minor marking to lower cover. Light splash mark to the blank page 60 but otherwise a very good copy of a rare and important book with a nice link to the Arts Club of which Voysey was an enthusiastic member. Library Hub locates eight copies in the UK with Worldcat adding a further nine worldwide. And scarce commercially, with only two copies appearing in the auction records. This is Voysey's only book (the 1906 Reason as a Basis of Art is really a short pamphlet) and represents the most significant statement of his beliefs, both… Read More
