The expedition left from Darwin on 9 September 1888 sailing along the north-west to Cambridge Gulf which provided the expedition with a unique opportunity to study the marine life of north-western Australia which had scarcely been examined previously. The English marine biologist, William Saville-Kent had been invited to join the cruise by Captain Vereker as a number of his officers were keen naturalists.
