Though obviously in only fair condition at best, it nevertheless presents decently in a jacket protector.

Boards, edges, and corners heavily rubbed. This is number 31 of 220 limited copies SIGNED by Van Vechten on the limitation page. A reading, reference, or placeholder copy.

Inner hinges jsut starting, and spine gilt dulled, else a nice example. A wonderful association copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Van Vechten to Prentiss Taylor, the illustrator and Van Vechten's frequent collaborator. The two white men were among the small group of non-Black artists and writers who were closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance. The two of them were especially close to Langston Hughes, establishing the Golden Stair Press with him in 1931. The inscription reads: "For Prentiss Taylor from Carl Van Vechten. New York February 13-1931." The inscription is followed by a rather lewd drawing of what appears to be a cat's hind quarters.

Spine darkened, including the label, which has some scuffs, and some faint offsetting to the boards, else a lovely, clean copy internally, with a wonderful contemporary bookseller label from Gotham Book Mart on the rear paste-down. This is number 41 of 195 limited copies SIGNED by Van Vechten on the limitation page. Though it's often noted that the book's title is "offensive to the modern reader," which is certainly true, it was in fact quite controversial in its time, as well. Wrappers partly perished along the very fragilt spine, with some small insect holes and a few stains. Contents clean. A scarce 19th century North Carolina imprint, which presents the lengthy biographical tribute by the sitting governor, Zebulon Vance, to a recently deceased former governor, David Swain. Swain had been governor in the 1830s, but remained active in North Carolina politics through the end of the Civil War and afterwards. He died in 1868, weeks after being thrown from a horse that had been gifted to him by General Sherman. Thornton 14202. Not in Sabin. Scarce.
